I didn't extend my drop curb as its not large anyway and there was already one there for the original drive. I did mine in a weekend though with some friends.

Cost was

2x bags of the blue gravel @ £100 a bag

7x (I think) 20mm to dust @ £30 a bag

sthil saw whacker and tractor hire came in @ £150 I think (That's for the big beast, the little one was a friends he tool the soil and rubble to use for drainage in the farm yard and cost me £50 in diesel)

£600 or so + a few bacon butties and a BBQ when we were finished :)

Round our way, only the council are allowed to drop a kerb, at £400 per kerbstone width. Ouch. Cost us more to do the kerb than to lay a new double drive!

Reason they charge that much is because they have to make sure there are no underlying issues, IE: electrical cables, gas, water ect in the way when they start digging, plus 9/10 times its not someones property and its council owned.

We wanted to get 3 curb stones dropped and were quoted £1800 off the council, which is well over priced. We were told only the council are allowed to do it.

Only the council round my way are allowed to do this. So I didn't even bother getting a price after they charged us £1200 to move a lamppost 3 sodding meters (We expanded drive to a double drive the thing was right in the middle of our plot front).

Robbing gits.

My brother removed his front hedge a few years back then done a mono block drive and the local charged him about £1800 to redo and drop the path,

less than 6 months later when I got my drive re mono blocked we got a bursed pipe and the council dug the full thing up and relaid the path for nothing.

could say he was a bit pissed lol as I stay only three doors down from him.

I had a quote yesterday for my drop curb, its 4 meters wide and as my neighbor has a drop curb, they will move his end angled drop curb and place it at the other end of mine and put in 5 half curbs and do the path for £900 and i thought that was a bit much lol.

you should always use the council to do this for one reason only, if you do it yourself or a company then you are responsible for it, should anyone trip and hurt themselves then they can take you to court for a claim, if the council do it then they take them to court for a claim

a contractor can do it but he or them needs to be on the approved sub-contractors list the councils have and use.

you also want to make sure you keep any letter from the council authorising you to get it dropped, as you will probably need that if you want to sell the house, depending on how thorough the solicitor is for your buyer....

All wise words of advice - and best followed to avoid problems later I'd say!!

The prices posted above do seem high though - I have never done it myself; but my dad did have the council extend the dropped curb area of his drive (London Borough of Waltham Forest) and it was only about £300 IIRC. Each local authority to their own I guess....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I know Liverpool council now charge you £50 for just coming out to look at the job

A legal drop kerb is a good investment with regards to your property value and you would always re-coup your costs iff you sold the property.

I got my quote from a council approved contractor, I live in like a circle of a road, which is fairly tight and parking is a nightmare, should be a cul- de-sac really, but in a couple of weeks they are placing double yellow lines on the whole inner circle and all the outer corners, to stop cars driving on the path to get round parked cars, which will also obliterate about 10 parking spaces, so im having to rush getting my drive done and have to get the drop curb done, not only as its a bylaw, but anyone will be parking in my space if im not back home in time, which really winds me up.

Thats not all though, i have to pay another £64 to have a white line in front of my drive to make sure no one can park there when the drive is finished, i could have really done without the expense as i would rather get the zed painted lol
