Started getting the car back on the road

Been working today on getting the car prepared to have the floor pan and sills welded. Spent the morning taking out the seats and carpet to reveal the extent of the rot.

Then spent an hour with a hot air gun removing the sound deadening and managed to only burn myself a bit once, which is pretty good going for me ! Other than the rust you can see, there was not much else lurking underneath, which is good new.

Is it possible to get replacement floor pan panels ? If so does anyone know where I can get one quickly ?

good on you mate, once if all out the way and you get the wire brush on there you will be able to see what's to do much more clearly.

little tip mate, dont use a hot air gun, use cold on the sound deadening, it just chips away with a hammer :)

I used some dry ice last time i had alot to remove, you can get it from BOC.

Glad its not just me thats got a huhe uphill task welding a zed, best of luck and if i was closer would happily lend a hand

Well the welding has been done, turned out not to be as bad as first thought. Looks like water got though the sealant at the corner of the floor pan and sills and then cause corrosion and then the metal to crack and split.

MOT booked for Monday but haven't got time to put the carpet back in so don't want to put the passenger and rear seats back in. This won't effect the MOT will it?

Well all the welding done and paint applied. I also fixed the lights problem, it turned out to be the earth wire to keep the HIDs on when Main beam turned on. As per usual it took hours to find it and then only by accident.

Went for MOT today and passed, even with all seats out except drivers seat. so the Zed lives on to fight for another year.

My mechanic friend has got me thinking of mods and even a possible respray, so may be some exciting times in store...

could you explain this more please mate as it sounds like some kind of mod...my HID,s go off when i high beam..so is it only the earth path thats switched off and ime persuming by running a seperate permanant earth they will stay on with high beam.

The stock setup has a relay that turns off the main beam when you flick on the full beam, that's fine on the stock setup because the mainbeams engage instantly. However whe you fit HID's the effect is lost if you've been driving along with the full beams on then flick them off again for a split second you will have no lights....not cool. So what many do is short out the light, this stops the relay deactivating the mainbeam when full beam is activated. The result is you get both on at the same time, super bright and no dark flash period, it also prolongs your HID life by not having them flick on off when you flash. The downside is when you flash without your main beams on the whole lot comes on, there is a way round this, cant remember what it is though...

Yea i understand the whole switchover prodedure Steve but have you any idea of whats involved in the "shorting method" to enable the HID,s to stay on;)

The simplest way is to cut the terminal off the earth wire coming out of the ballast (normally black), crimp on a ring terminal and secure with the nearest bolt to ground. The downfall of this method is that when you flash your main beam, your hids will flash too. Not a problem if you're like me and drive with your lights on all the time...

Cheers Joel..so i was right in thinking it just needed a permanant earth then to work according to the above.

Yeah, the wiring diagram shows it too. When you flash, it switches an earth from the dipped to the main.

thanks:thumbup1:
