What fuel do I run it on? 95? 97? or shell v power? tescos top fuel? its a 1990 model twin turbo 3l manual with just a powerflow exhaust no more mods, also think its got abit of a misfire through the revs at different rpms every now and then it takes off then bogs down feels like its holding back, any idea what it could be? Thanks

you be better off using 97 all the time ... and if u can shell v power or another alike

regarding your problem it could be a vac/boost leak or even a bad connections

Welcome to the club ... get some pictures up of ya car :)

I'm not sure what the SX's use... ... and did you try that forum? ............ :p

welcome to the forum...

you'll need to do a full Pm job on the car first to rule out all that stuff...

fuel and air filters

spark plugs (PFR6B-11C)

check and clean all connectors (come of them are awkward to get off but be careful and you will be OK)

MAF is under the front panel (two screws)

check ecu temp sender unit (the two pronged one)

get yourself a consult connector and the free version of the software is good enough to check a lot of things that could be causing issues.

speak to your bank manger about a massive over-draught....

Oh, and take up a religion and start praying ... lol...

Our stock engines were designed to run on 95octaine so they are perfectly happy on that if not much has been done to them.

As for his issues, id start by going over the connectors to the engine and giving them a good clean, paying attention to the injectors / coil packs / PTU / CAS unit connections.

Doesn't that depend on whether its an import?

yes and the ECU thats in the car ... and the car just runs better on 97 anyways ..

Oh and there isnt a 300sx Medallion Man think its just a type ..

Mark, you need to replace your sarcasm detection module!

Im sure if you just unplug the connectors, and give them a good clean that will fix it. No need for a new SDM.

Why? japan uses the same RON as us, 95 ron here, is the same as 95ron in japan? so why would it make a difference with being an import or not? unless you have imported it from the US, which uses a completely different grading system, but even then, their 95 octane is around our 99 octane

Although japans low octane is 89ron, and their high octane is 96 ron (hence the warning sticker), but our cars were designed as stock to run 95ron, all cars are going to run better on higher octane stuff, im just pointing out the fact you are not going to do it any harm with 95 octane either if its a stock engine, unless there is something seriously wrong with it.

its a different octane rating type, their fuel has a higher octane rating than ours.

I thought Japan had a higher octane fuel too.

I always use optimax (well the new vpower+ thing now)

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

I just use V-Power by default, especially with upped boost. I put £50-worth in yesterday [i.e. a thimbleful] of their new Nitro+ in, but I didn't get any nitrous :( ;)

wouldnt dream of running anything bar 99ron tesco momentum or shell v-power due to the higher octane ratings of japanese fuel.

to put it another way, i know people who have had trouble on 95/97... i know no people who have had trouble with 99ron running an import.

True - at least with UK spec cars..... Some say J-spec cars need super unleaded, but many have said that the ECU adapts to normal unleaded anyway. I have a UK spec and run normal unleaded - although I do find that in extremely hot weather (28 degrees plus) the car responds better on super.

And welcome to the club Owen!!

Doh! I also thought those people from Japan land used higher rated fuel explosiony numberingnesses, thus the old jdm chips being risky... Everyday is a

Obviously you've put the connector back on backwards. Its a common mistake matey. No need to rock the boat.

The issue is knock when running a JDM ECU on 95 RON fuel. The UK OEM timing maps differ a LOT from the JDM maps, up to 6° more retarded in the transient boost areas. The stock knock control is only operational at 3200 RPM and below at high loads.

The ECU doesn't really adapt to lower octane fuel, if it detects knock whilst in a load cell with knock control enabled, it switches to the knock maps (richer fuelling, more retarded timing) in an effort to stop the uncontrolled combustion, and will also limit boost to 7psi if knock continues. It will only do this below 3200 RPM, however.
