You will need a new gearbox, sounds like the friction material has worn away, not unusual on a Z auto box.

Ok the noise is the fluid pump complaining, the lack of drive is the drive pump been unable to supply line pressure, the cause is the pick up strainer in the sump is blocked, when you switch the engine off the fluid drains back clearing the strainer briefly so you have drive back for a short time.

strainer 1.jpg

So the plan is to drain the box, then remove the sump pan be aware it will still contain about 1 litre of fluid in the sump pan so can get messy (be prepared) the strainer is very obvious and can be removed by undoing 3 x 10 mm holding bolts.

Once removed give it a really good clean out with some brake or carb cleaner, take a closer look at the particals that have blocked the strainer, they will be either fibre, metal or a combination, if just fibre its a good chance a clean out and new fluid will be all you need to do and drive should be returned. Of course if there are any metal particals in there it may point to bigger problems but its worth a try and should not cost too much, get 5 litre of dexron 3 if you can a sump gasket, if not be careful and you can reuse the old one with a little sealant provided the gasket remains in one piece.

Hope that helps

Can guarantee you will have drive back, just see how it is.

Awesome, hats off for taking the time to give such a detailed, informative reply and potentially saving a fellow zedder a substantial amount of money. Great post...

Well i took the car to a local auto specialist and the diagnosis was a full overhaul which will set me back £1300.Boy im not happy.Only done about 1000 miles in it since i bought it.Is there anyone cheaper out there as 1300 is a lot of cash at this momment in time

i would manualise it if i was you, there is a complete kit in the for sale section for 450, add another 100 quid for misc shiz and do it over a weekend with some mates, its not the worst job in the world ( so ive been told, never dont it on a 300 but have on other cars, its relatively easy)

im sure there would be enough people on here close enough to help out, tbh a manual conversion is not that much more work over a gearbox change.

jaikai on here did it on his driveway

local auto specialist... pretty much irrelevant unless they have experience on Zeds....

do a search on this forum for garages and you might find somewhere close to home that at least knows Zeds..

if its only the job you mention then shipping it to Jeff and back would be heaps cheaper than that and he would give it the one over as well....

mind you there very well could be a heap of things wrong with it...

good luck.

i changed for manual when was nothing wrong with auto box and it regret it :(

Still not fixed the bugs yet?

I might give jeff a bell tmrw and have a chat. The manual conversion is a possibility.Just didnt really want or expect to shell out over a grand after doing less than a thousand miles,so pretty hacked off

Did you try the fluid change and strainer clean out ? unless the auto-box specialist inspected inside the box their diagnosis may be less accurate then they said, rebuilding the box will fix it what ever the issue be it terminal or a basic clean out....have advised many over the years who later say the clean out worked.

Hiya jeff.I dont think they did the fluid and strainer change,i think theyve only looked at it.Yet the recovery guy said exactley same as you and he used to rebuild auto boxes.I got the message that torque convertor wasnt working, stuff was disintergrating etc.Il ring him tmrw and write down exactly what he said, and ring you if ok

Cheers for chatting earlier jeff.I did phone to auto guy up and was pretty flabergasted by reaction.I asked him to phone you re gear box and he said im not phoneing anyone, ive repaired auto boxes for 30 years.I then asked if he could just drain the oil and clean the strainer to which he replied no,the clutch is breaking up and he will do the whole job and not as you recommended.Well what can you say to that?.Im not getting him to do any work now as he come across as an obnoxious prick and at the end of the day its my money.

So im thinking of next step once ive got car back home.Id like to get it to you but its a long way.Any suggestions on getting it there.Or anyone here got a trailer and a bit of free time?.obviously id pay and get a couple of beers in

Well ive arranged to get the car up to jeffs on thursday morning.Bit more advice needed though. The garage its at,at the momment the bloke is being a complete arsehole.I phoned him today to say ive arranged for it to be picked up and have been very resonable throughout, even though he refused to do the work i asked him to do!!!.He has said he will leave car outside and i may get charged storage fees.Im really in the mood to chin this idiot,Can he legally do this?.I know for sure the garage is going to get a hell of a review on internet from me!!!

I would personaly just just get the car pick up by who ever you have arranged to pick it up and sent it to zedworld were you now they will do the correct thing in the right order. I wouldnt worry about storing charges his trying his luck, and if he tried that one when you went to pick up the car ring the police and say his refusing to give me car back and whilst you there say i might just ring the local press aswell, dont put up any slander commet on anywere, you could be liable and find youself in for cost and trouble. Think possitive.

**Update**

So with some whinning and moaning we got enough drive to get the zed on the ramp.

As we thought the when the sump was removed there was a lot of silt sitting on all of the surfaces and in the sump, there was no long fibres and no metal at all on the sump magnet just old oil and silt.

The sump went into the parts washer and the strainer removed and it joined the sump in the parts washer too, whilst that was going on the pipes and cooler was flushed out with the air line and brake cleaner until all ran clear ( messy job!!)

The sump and strainer and refitted with new seals and the box refilled with some fresh Dexron lll and the engine started, no noise and drive engaged just as it should.

10 miles of testing and a very happy gearbox performing as its should with no noise and all gears and overdrive and kick down working well.

Of course predicting how long something will last is difficult but should be ok as there was no fibres or metal parts.

Fantastic job jeff.im really happy.esp as bloke here was adamant it was this that and the other, well he would as he wanted 1200 quid!!!.Glad there was no metal parts. So what would you recommend with box.How often to clean it up etc?.also can you send over your address.cheers darren

Autobox should really be a checked every 24k miles so not an massive amount you need to do, however as most zeds are not used full time every two to three years should be used as a service interval as well as an after market fluid cooler.

Think the Portugese authorities should be alerted to Jeff's alledged dodgy dealings!.....that way we get to keep him. LOL

Jeff, your diagnosis and handling of this issue has again been spot on...again!, Surreyseagull66 has had everything from being sold auto boxes to Low life auto mechanics trying to rip him off! you even posted a how to, should our man have wanted to sort the problem himself...no vested interest other than the services are there if needed and they were.

Sorry for slight thread drift, but thought it worth a mention. Nice one!
