hi all, ive got a VW Radio Navigation sitting in my room and my stereo is in desperate need of replacing. Id rather have this installed. does anyone know who and where I can get an unbiased advice from? It seems that the few audio stores that I've been to are more interested in selling me one. Or are adamant that it cant be done. Im sure it can be done. The last person said to me it wouldn't work because its coded to the vw computer. either way id like have that installed. is it possible?

As far as fitting and wiring it should fit, if it is a stand alone unit, ie no function from the original vehicle.

ok these head units do not have .. a Ignition on switch .. so all u need to do is wire the live direct so radio will come on/off with out keys ..

is the same for most modern cars now that sense you getting in the car and all works from the ECU as well

other than making it fit the radio facia go for it

I would be very surprised if you could get this to actually work with the navigation etc. If its anything like a BMW system then the screen/headunit actually doesn't do much at all and the whole system is integrated into the car, for receivers, aerials and even the navigation computer is distributed through the car and its all coded to work with a particular car as well.

However I hope I'm wrong and you can get it to work, if however you can't there are plenty of places that provide an OEM "look" fully self contained headunit that is often better than the OEM units with regards to functions!

would it need coding? reprogramming? i think it has no function to the vehicale giving that its not in it, lol it was pulled from a wrecked car so i guess so

as far as the navigation im not really concerned if it did work, double bonus if it did, but mainly radio and playing music. if its too much pain in the ass then ill just sell it and get something of similar kind..

True but you may find it won't even start up properly without being in a suitable host vehicle. Give it a go, would fantastic if it did work!

I've got a chinese copy of this set in my zed. If I remember correctly your one is called something like the MF2D? I have an Octavia II Vrs with 'Stream mp3' and looked at upgrading to a second hand one of these out of a Tuareg that would slot straight in. The feedback I was getting off the skoda forums was that it would have needed to be programmed via the car brains etc to operate due to canbus etc. Weather the issue working (or not) would have been with my actual car brains or the sat-nav brains, I don't know (the fact that my zed doesnt have canbus wiring might negate this problem).

I ended up buying a chinese copy of it that worked so well in the skoda (over 3 years now) I bought another for my zed. You can re-program the boot-up screen to show a Nissan logo too on these chinese copies. You can buy a Nissan-Quadlock adaptor off ebay for a handfull of quid that saves you hacking your original connectors. I had an issue with the switched-live and perm live that must be different on the VW to the Nissan, but if you're contemplating a task such as this I'm sure you will suss that easily enough yourself.

In any case it will take a degree of hacking of your centre console (both plastic & metal) to fit it in, so my advice to you would be to definitely check it DOES work ok before you commence the hacking.....otherwise you will be stuck with an odd shaped cavity to try n fit another set into.....

Mine is not quite finished off properly yet. I still need to make a bit of an infil around it to hide a few small gaps, but I think it looks great. Gives it a nice n modern look.....

Good look with it, in any case.

i took it to another audio shop and two of them one of which was the owner said '**** chance of that getting to work' :glare: he proceeded to say that the unit i have was wired into every aspect of the car it came from and that even the connectors have that cache or something like that and its going to be hard to get it to work with the nave, i told him dont worry about the navi and to just get the radio/cd player to work. to which his reply was if some how they did manage to get it to work even then it wouldn't work properly. they didnt even try to power it up. dont think these audio folks like the idea of switch and swap. anyways i did a bit or research and found that some have successfully got this to work in a nissan elgrand.

i did stick in in the bay to get a look of it and it fit but found that i would have to cut the middle bit of the trim out and be left with a gap on each side. or custome build one. it would be easier to get a cheap china copy but wheres the fun in that....

heres a picture of the numbers

Personally, for the effort involved in getting the unit to work - and then fabricating the centre console - I'd sell it on Ebay and use the proceeds to buy yourself a decent new head unit!

Kenwood makes a fine single DIN unit with DAB (which actually works very well)....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Hi mate,

Not that great with these type stereos but it looks very similar to the stereo a golf had in our workshop the other week.

a problem u may come across is a lot of the new cars have can bus wiring.

the golf I worked on they wanted to replace both rear doors and they thought they had a result cause new doors have electric windows so have them too.

but the door I think only had 2 wires coming into the car, but had central locking, electric windows and speakers running through the same 2 wires.

Car has modules and sends pulses down the wires so not easy to wire stuff in.
