I posted at the start of this month i had bought a SWB N/a with a naff engine and was planning on doing a TT swap among other things and general tinkery stuffs.... ( BTW i bought this with a Big end Bearing gone.....)

Well i started to strip her down and upon removing the R/h Wing i found this abomination!

Then obviously having to remove the engine and planning on stripping the underside i start removing the engine beginning with the Fluids and find a certain something peeping out the sump! (the dipstick i knew about when buying the car and the look on the owners face when i asked him where the rest of it was was priceless)

This next one isnt detrimental but i thought, at least I've gained something so far from buying this.....

Now for my favorite surprise ive had yet...

Oh, out of interest have you managed to measure the pressure off your PAS pump during steering?

Using a Mk2 MR2 one on mine and occasionally when initially turning in the assistance is down slightly never got round to checking it out yet but be good if the Astra one works well I can just swap to that.

Just the man ive been wanting to stumble along!

Spoke to leon at Alunox to make some manifolds similar to yours....but when he told me the price, i fell of my chair..then i got back on it so i could fall of it again!!!

I have problems with pressure relief at full lock, but cant seem to find out anyone who knows how the pressure relief system works within the astra, wether it just slows the pump down using a set of slip rings on the steering column or wah.. so im thinking about putting a variable pressure relief system in it at the pump to stop it stalling under pressure and blowing my fuses.

My email is adamhollings@msn.com if you could drop me an email i have a couple of questions about the CAS and other things. any info would be appreciated buddy!

Hope your well.

Sent you an Email.

Re: the manifolds, to be fair mine were bloody complicated because I wanted 44x1m primaries. He could make a much, much simpler set of 'down and back' 4-1 headers much cheaper. My car is there from Weds to get the oil pipework finished, I can ask him to get an estimate if you want? TBH, if you're running stock cams I doubt you'd notice the difference between the simple and complex ones as there is so little overlap.

I actually want for the MR2 pump because it has the PRV built in, just have a feeling it's a capacity issue rather than pressure. Hopefully between us we can find something that works!

One other thing, did you change the chain guides? If you have the early plastic ones they're prone to disinti

That reminds me sir, I need to ask you about a roofing matter. I want to change my 1970s concrete lintle porch into a peaked roof.

Yeah had a leak in it the other day but person I'm renting it from is all over it.

Things I've done since last post are

Ecu wiring loom

Solid gearbox mount

Custom one piece prop.

Other casual stuff...

Yessss

Good to see you got the car up here ok. Is it martys old unit on the right? Or the left hand one?

  • Author

yeah its martys old place, he is just over from me now so we can send love letters to each other. you should come down soon, and we can all hold hands.

Yeah its still the z32 box but its been pushed back around 20mm so ive had to chop up my g/box mount and weld it myself. also had to shorten the prop. nothing too crazy

no idea why but the gear lever now sits an inch over to the left...

Well and update but one without pics as i have no wifi to upload my pics yet (im at work if anyone is wondering how im posting this..)

well apart from the fact i've relocated from telford to lincoln which has slowed my progress dramatically but now i have actually achieved some stuffs!

i fitted the gearbox with the one piece prop jeff made (slightly shorter) and ran into a problem with my flywheel touching the bell housing so i couldnt turn it over. with the gearbox being slightly higher it made putting it on a right nightmare. i had a 'pre-ground' bellhousing but to be extra safe i shaved them down a little more and to find out it still touched was irritating. however i managed to sort this with the gearbox in situ as removing the gearbox would have damaged either flywheel or my stupidly expensive soft ally adapter plate.

That is sorted now and i have put 4.7 liters of some fine oily stuff with more to go in which is good as i thought i had reduced the oil capacity too much, and even better...no leaks!

shimming the starter motor was not fun at all as i found the lower bolt hole was all cross threaded and messed up which was irritating, but with a longer bolt it holds so thats good.

i have a little vid of a dry crank just to hear it as its been a long slog up until now. This also means my tiny battery is powerful enough.

My s2000 clutch master is doing well and is super small so no contact with anything other than the bulkhead. i do however have to space it away from the bulkhead a couple of mil as the pedal doesnt come back far enough to allow oil into back into the cylinder if i was to lose any. (adjustment thread is already at max)

i haven't yet found a replacement for my fan as ive confirmed that it is way to big for the gap i have at the front of the engine.

To do:

wire in my lurvely innovate gauges and calibrate my widebands.

connect my Link to the loom as load my random base map.

connect fuel lines and attempt to start.

One of the main things to do is get this heap booked in to bodymech, after seeing some of their work recently its really given me some motivation to get it to them.

Apologies for no pics as its so boring just reading.

Cheers

My stater bolts did the same, the stock ones are m10 I ran a 10mm drill be through then tapped them to m12, had to enlarge the other holes on the starter to but now it's solid as a rock. I used Allen head fixing which made life easier as well. Keep thinking about switch to an electronic PS like yourself, that way I can run the turbo inlets straight and bin that dumb dog leg section.

  • Author

yeah its pretty sweet the PS system except i now have a 110A alt to take the extra load and need to make a pressure relief system to stop it stalling the pump.

This is my solid G/box mount. kinda had to make it while it was in position which was annoying, but it really is solid..

My 3 gauge pod pillar, as im sure many of you have seen before

My gauges fitted

And the wire set up behind, allowing it all plug and play. fairly normal but i liked it.

I do have another gauge which is my water gauge which is going in my door vent.

How is the electric power steering coming along? Thinking of doing the same to mine, or similar anyways.
