If you take off the interior boot plastic panels, either side you can see the inside face of the rear quarter. If you stick your head in the hole and shine a torch down you can see the seams where the rear quarter skin joins the inner arch skin and the structure inside the boot, all meeting in the bottom corner. From the outside, this is the bit behind the rear wheel, down the bottom, the little lip that collects all the dirt.

Today I set about rust proofing inside this area when I noticed quite a bit of dirt inside especially in the bottom corner on the petrol filler side (lwb) where it has congregated, so I decided to clean it all to get it protected.

When I was spraying my fast drying solvent cleaner I noticed it was fairly readily running out onto the floor, so this has led me to this question... Is anyone aware whether this bottom corner has a factory drain hole or is it supposed to be sealed off from the outside?

I assume the dirt has come from a combination of dust, condensation and ingress through the fuel filler seal, also now possibly road dirt coming in. If it does have a factory drain hole, then what I'm using to rust proof will more than likely block it so I thought I'd check here first before I make a rear quarter aquarium!

There is a few outlets on that rear valance, there is the hole for the rear air vents and also a drain hole for the aerial, and usually it rusts around that point, but its not a MOT failure that i know off as one of my zeds past its mot with a rusty hole in it.

If you`re talking about the rear quarters where the bumper attaches i`m pretty sure there is no drain hole ..but they do rust. You can buy the section as a repair panel from nissan. I had to weld mine as water had accumulated via dodgy light seals. All rust proofed now. A pic of the area would help..trust me i`ve had rust in every part of that area and i can point out what i know to keep an eye on.

This is what is behind the bumper, got some more pictures if you need them. Got them from a member repairing his car.

No problem at all mate. If my exploits help others, I am well happy.

Just looked at your resto ..my god ,was that parked in the northsea! That should be made a sticky just for rust reference alone. Top work , fantastic job!

Indeed, some impressive work there matey. Could you shed some light as to whether the area has drain holes from manufacture?

I can't say for sure, as both leading corners of the rear arches were missing due to corrosion. My understanding is that these areas were closed seams with no drain gaps. I would have a good look at the inside of the rear arches, (from inside the boot) especially the passenger side near the fuel filler neck. Mine had rusted through and was spraying water etc' into the well itself.

That's where I'm looking. It's the reason I started the thread as I got access to that area to rust proof. It had some dirt in the bottom corner and down the seam on the inside so I thought I would ask if its supposed to be a drain path. I think it should be a sealed seam too but thought I'd double check. I can only assume the dirt is coming down from the fuel filler seal and has built up over the years.

Not wishing to discourage you, but this was the main cause of my rear arch troubles.

Took a while, but got there in the end. Should outlast me!

Well worth the effort.

Hope it helps.

By the way, did you post anything on the mig forum?

Joely p, Sorry for high jacking your thread mate.

Out of interest, did you have the plastic splash shield there in front of the filler pipe?
