There has been a few threads recently about turbo swaps without removing the engine and by pure chance in the workshop today I had the opportuntity to take a few pics when working in the same area.

 

As it happens there was nothing wrong with the turbo, this poorly zed had a noisy manifold gasket but of course to gain access to the manifold required the turbo removal.

 

Its interesting to see quite how involved this job can be and the lack of room, also when all removed the area looks like a bomb site!!

Removing the water feed banjo bolt gave the first view of the "awkward " turbo nut the two other rear nuts are a doddle.

taking off the master cylinder/servo... could coarse other problems down the line with BMC seals and Major air in system

how easy is it to get to the 4 bolts holding that all together what is needed to be removed to gain sight

The trick with the BMC seals is to bleed the system by NOT pressing the pedal to the floor ( use a piece of wood or similar under the pedal to reduce stoke), that way the seals stay within the swept area they have already moved within, and fluid bleeding is done at the ABS unit only when the master cylinder is removed as the pipes go directly to the abs unit so not that hard.

 

The bolts would most likely be accessable with the booster in place, its just less of a ball ache with it removed, also when the turbo comes out it needs rotating and suspect there would not be enough room.

thanks mikey, had mine out only a few weeks ago, and its blowing on the turbo to manifold gasket. so hoping to get it done this weekend.

I notice the steering rack is detached there as well, is the frame dropped or just the main shaft disconnected?

No need to drop the sub frame, just the steering rack shaft, also as Mikey pointed out the brake booster can be left in, moving the master cylinder to the side is possible so no bleeding of the brakes after but no biggy either way.

Ok that's good to know, tbh I think il pull the block for my new tubs anyways, being bigger space might be a PITA. Always good to know, having done some work up the recently it spiked my curiosity.
