  • We did a video earlier this week, the Z hasn't been out the garage since July 2020. So happy for this, this is miles away from professional video, and the guy who helped me with the drone and editing,

  • These parts turned up from Specialty-Z today. Last significant items for the "bolt on" build. I'll post some more pictures of all the stuff I have collected over the years (literally!) in the "Project

Today nothing, but I did take the Zed out for a little drive the other day - and stopped for a couple of pics. Any excuse 😉

Alic - Have you asked Jimmer??

No but had a chat to Lee today. He doubts it's actually the gearbox that's grinding but I'm convinced it is.

I'll send him a message

Can you record the grinding sound you have?

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

Wow that is generous, better crack out the beers and fire up the barby then haha.

First start however is where am I going to find a manual conversion with all parts if this is to go ahead...

Bear in mind I'm a busy man so I can't promise it will be easy to pin down a date. I'm busy till October at present lol.

Was going to but haven't been out in it again since.

Of course, I'm busy as well and if I have to go pick up stuff from Lees that won't be until October either.

I'll help too if needed Ali, feel bad that after all that the box only lasted a day, not done a conversion before personally but happy to help all the same.

I'm weighing up my options, trying to find a manual box and see how much I will have to spend.

It's not hard it's just long winded.

Manual conversion £600 if your interested

Ali, if Lee Dent doesn't think it's the box mate, I'd be inclined to listen to him. Particularly as that box came from a trusted source and I was told was running sweet until the day the engine gave up on the car it came from.

I'd do some more investigating before condemning the box cause you could go to the trouble and expense of conversion, then find you still have the same problem.

There's many things that could grind, one of those things being the differential, another being the prop shaft...

I'd be surprised if it turns out to be the box

95% sure the grinding is coming from the box. I would agree, it was running sweet, but something in my car killed it.

Jimmer said there was probably some Debris in the lines from the old box which finished off a dying box.

Mark Kent just said autos are sh** lol.

Manual needs to be done, and if I can break a car at the same time, I may even turn a profit...

There's many autos out there still running fine, think you've just had some crappy luck.

Still don't understand why a bit of crap in the lines might kill a box. Particularly a box with no problems. Is the box still working? If it is, I would suggest taking it to Lee Dent and letting him diagnose it. As for breaking a car, I'd save yourself the hassle bud unless you find a cheap manual. Ifti has a manual conversion for 600 delivered..

Turning a profit on a breaker is fairly time consuming, I still haven't finished half stripping my one!

I totally agree I have 90,000 on my auto never had a problem, you need to find out what has caused it before spending any more money.

1997 Jaguar XK8 Scraped ☹️

I'd be more inclined to say the box being dry had no fluid whatsoever in it ( was it a year you said it sat for?) was always told that's a no no! Of course could have just been drained for transport so could be irelavent.

probably was fine on the car it came off, ( the fact it was initially fine supports this) doesn't mean it wasn't about to fail.

Had autoboxs fail on me before, very little if any prior warning, iirc literally stopped going into 4th and 3rd,

You wanted a manual anyway, given its a project maybe save up and fit things like a 1 piece prop, eliminating as much as possible at the same time,

Thats a silly statement...ive had 3 auto,s all with increased boost motors and drove hard, never had one fail yet;)

My chip turned up from sz, fitted it then my zed wouldn't idle... Hunting all over the shot, 3 hours later... (and much sadness) found my selin had somehow been put into add mode.... ( switch is exposed on the new ones not hidden like the early type) back in average fired straight up.... Think I've still got a slight leak on my 300 degree rail, probably caught a seal on the way in, but that's tomorrows job...

Yes........

....Yes - I'm up to 105k miles on mine and (touching wood) have no issues......

...And yes! Poor maintenance, lack of oil changes and J-spec cooling might have contributed to 'box failures. However these cars came with (old) Nissan reliability built in - and such serious failures are usually attributable to wear and tear from galactic mileages (which will affect any car in time), or the aforementioned neglect.

Don't just condemn the 'box without exploring all other factors Ali - you might save yourself a lot of work, not to mention £££s.

will be fitting my stilin dual maff in a few day using the average like you are. how come you used a chip from sz and didnt not get it mapped over here ?

Main reason wanted to run the engine, test it for leaks/problems before its put on a dyno and mapped, really don't like the idea of dyno'ing anything that's just been put back together, was only $100,

Done it's job, I'd have payed to have it trailed to a mapper, had them try to map it just to find the small fuel leak and be back to square one. The chip was done to order using my spec list so should be fit for purpose, although obviously a custom dyno map should be better, but that's on the cards for a few months time when I've fixed a few finds.

I traded a couple of hours of sleep to try and get my door cards in today.. Was a complete sh#t as I was tired and have fingers like saveloys, but managed to get the passenger side in.. Tested the speakers and found I'm gonna need an amp, as the 40 watt output of the stereo isn't man enough to get much out of the 400 watt speakers.. DSC_0355.jpg

The gearbox was full of fluid on the day that all picked it up from me phoenix.. It emptied half it contents down my arm when the prop shaft was released so it hadn't been stood dry.

The box was definitely in good shape and that's why I'm surprised at the failure. Something else is definitely afoot and I'm sure it's ecu related. I gave Ali the ecu from my auto that the box came from so I still think it should be tested with that.

If the ecu he had in it has a problem, then maybe it may sort it out

I might be able to help you there......

Ahhh, Mr phutumsch... That's a rather interesting looking box you have there! 400watt 2 channel amp by any chance?
