Seeing as I convert normal stock lights into 99 spec copies and I have now, to further update them started to fit led strip lights inside - I like my own work so I am going to fit the led's into my genuine 99 spec tails.

Below you will notice a pic of these in bits and I want to dispel a few myths and state some facts.

The outer lenses are no different but the stripe 99 additions are on a clear bit of perspex which is double sided stuck in against the outer (please see post 9 pic, etc) and I can duplicate this almost perfectly by adding lines to the old units, these lenses have all the E markings the same, however there is a line of text and this is on the red part just under the reflector on the 99's and much lower down on the amber part on the older ones.

The red diffuser is identical on all and exactly the same shade - I have read folk saying it is a different shade of red, it is not :detective:.

In certain light the 99's do look slightly different and I can only put this down to the very high reflective properties of the chromed insert, this I cannot replicate  only to spray them with chrome spray.

The backs are identical, part numbers and all the advice on bulb watts and types to be used in different countries, however the 99's have these two extra lines stamped into the black back 'with amber lens' 'with white lens'.

The stop/tail bulb holders are the same, however the amber bulb holder on the 99's will not fit into the older indicator chamber opener, the blobs will just not allow and vice versa. The 99's use an offset pinned amber bulb in it's bulb holder as it sits behind a clear diffuser lens, this is a light grey colour and not black, the older type bulb for this same position uses a bulb that as to have straight pins :cool3:.

Great to of met you both today Brian and very grateful for your posted comments on my 300.

I haven't just got enough leds as yet, would you possibly believe to complete the work on my own units, so any pics you can post up as requested will be good to see :cool3:.

Finally getting round this weekend to completing the job of led'ing my 99 tails and I have amended my lead post as I have discovered that there is a plastic insert that the lines are on so please view the pic below, I don't know how I missed it before and have never seen anyone anywhere showing or even stating that this the case :cool3:.

I guess not many take them apart worldwide :smartass:.

I didn't want to disturb it, as it was pretty well stuck down so I just lifted a corner to show.

Top work Andy....!!

....And I look forward to Brian's pics.....!!

Richard:cool3:

Things are moving a little slower here atm Richard and cant see me getting it out the workshop and cleaned up untill about mid march...Need to buy rubber, mount the 89 rear spoiler then clean and mop the paint (dont know why as its getting painted in may anyway) so rear light pics are running late. After reading your Sat morning drive thread its got me fired up again though:cool3:

Still it'll be worth the wait though Bri....!!

And if a few more stories of people enjoying their Zs help drive you on, then that's what we'll have to do....!!

Richard:cool3:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

This isn't particularly related to the 99 spec lights but seeing as I have loads of carcasses and have had loads of tail units through my hands I did save these chrome inserts from a set, now don't ask why I have some of these as I have found nearly all do not and I only have these and no more.

I have also found that without these the white paint inside around the bulbs as flaked or burnt off on many units.

Primarily there job would be as a heat protector as the brake filament bulbs get very very warm but of course do have reflective properties although I have not visibly noticed a difference, the small one on the end is a bit of a mystery piece.

Anyway FYI, I have now done away with my led conversion and gone back to stock bulbs :cool3:.

Erm, I didn't think anyone cared about my led tails and another tongue in cheek answer, stock wins COTY !!!!

Nobody else would of noticed but the fitment of my all 3 tail units was doing my head in, not lining up and the reason for this is I crammed that many led's inside they would slowly come apart.

Again nobody would of noticed but on one side one of the two strips I used for the brake light part had failed, on closer inspection the two wire sheath to it had burnt, surprised it didn't blow a fuse every time, all the other 3 brake light wire sheaths were perfect so I think a one off failure.

I could of mended with enhanced changes but it would of needed practically starting again so I sacked them off, I am also working on making my reverse light panel 99 spec red looking when off again and also I have sorted my 3rd, 4th, or 5th whatever brake light flasher out as well so have things in bits today and really I wanted the quick 'fix'.

after having both..LED and bulbs i can honestly say i prefare the spread of light in the chambers from bulbs over the leds.plus in direct sunlight it can be a bit hard to see the indicators with leds too;)

six of one and half a dozen of the other Andy...one half of me likes the "glow" of bulbs and the spread of light they give and the other half of me likes the moden look and sharpness of the leds...

So when do the 99 spec copy panels become available?? Can you tell I want one? Lol

Will be fitting the one you sent me tomorrow along with trying out the new smd brake bulbs ( yes I will be adding pics :) )

Yea that's what I'm thinking :) just renewed my membership so il PM ya shortly (once it works) :)
