paint advice please, before I set fire to it....

Hi guys,

Primered engine bay yesterday, and was happy till I got home from work,

Seem to have a reaction problem, I used dinitrol stonechip that is overpaintable on the chassis rails either side of engine bay at the bottom and the area where battery tray is plus the opposite side, thought it may be a bit harder wearing...

Stonechip was dried for maybe couple weeks before it got painted over, came home had a bubble so picked it and it pulls of in lumps has u can see in one of the pics, the stonechip is soft and sticky now so primer has reacted somehow,

The other pic is where I have pushed my finger nail in, all the rest of bay is rock hard and won't scratch just where stonechip is.

Really pi@#ed off, will it dry or will I have to remove it all,

Even know it's on places u don't see don't want to risk stuff happening down there and it chipping off,

It's etch primer, dinitrol stone chip overpaintable, and 2k high build someone please tell new what's happened I'm so depressed lol.

If it's a chemical reaction between the 2 it may have to come off, although it may be that there were just a few small patches of stone chip that hadn't fully cured

U reckon it Will cure under the 2pac or just take it off,

Should have dried cause its been couple of weeks, and was not soft like that before primer.

Only thing I can think I may of done is put stonechip on to thick, or primer on to thick and sitting on stonechip to long wet and soaking in.

If I take it off is a wire brush on a drill the best way...

Thank u for the reply

I may be wrong but doesn't 2K paint react with 1K? Maybe need a barrier coat between the two.

You could try leaving it a few days or even weeks if you have the time to see if it will eventually harden as taking off stonechip is a pain at the best of times, I'd use a grinder with a pad it'll be easyer to control and quicker than a drill

Not sure really but it was dinitrol stonechip which is said to be overpaintable

Really annoyed with this bodywork crap, should have just let body shop do the lot, painted the shell couple years back no problems,

So i thought id paint engine bay get engine back in and drive to body shop.

Big mistake.

really sorry to hear this mate, have a little break then get stuck in again. With the knowledge on here we'll help you get through this and you'll be so pleased when your done. Groover has a fair bit of knowledge using 2pac with other type's of paint. He'll give you good advice mate.

To be honest want to get it done so may has well take it off lol,

Only good thing is I should get away stripping where stonechip is,

The 2 chassis rails, battery tray area plus opposite side and where it's peeling in photo just behind headlights.

God I hate this car.

Cheers for your advice...

I'll get it done the weekend it's just a right kick in the nuts, everytime i think I'm getting closer go back a stage lol.

Guys just went out and scratched everywhere lol,

The places that are soft is where the stonechip is on very thick.

There's that bit that's peeled of and a few spots here and there on chassis rails where looking close its real thick underneath and battery tray area.

The rest is rock solid can't scratch it with my nail at all,

So hopefully might be able to save it in places or would u take it all of over whole engine bay.

Before spraying any 2k, over any unknown paint type i spray a sealer coat, which is clear, but it seems your underseal hasn't cured in the thick areas and the 2k has got under it and reacted. scrape off and remove the affected area and put a thinner coat of dinitrol on. Putting coats of anything on too thick will always struggle to cure under the preceding coats.

Jesus Tez feel bad for you man.

Give it to Liam. Don't spend any more £££££

Liam put primer on lol, worse thing is he came the night before to primer it with my gun filled it with primer I had left pushed the trigger and through it in the bin, said it was dog .... lol.

Came round with his sata primer gun and blasted it on.

He has devilbiss top coat gun mine was a cheap cheap nasty one.

The difference in guns is nuts lol.

But it should have been ok but I blasted stonechip to thick I think,

Soon be done lol.

Pop round after 6 one night we need to chat about your car get yours rolling

What stuff do you use. Got a link I'm doing my car soon :)

I got a better equivalent from my paint guys, its basically a bar coat sealer http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RFU-Isolator-Car-Paint-Sealer-1L-Isolate-it-Quick-Drying-Barcoat-From-Bitec-/110910092577?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item19d2c1b521

or the original http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Paint-BARCOAT-SEALER-FOR-ALL-PAINT-SURFACES-1lt-/290420455029?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item439e687675

Especially good for our Poly bumpers where crazing and cracking repairs have been done. I tried just 2k high build primer on the rear bumper and a week later started to show the stress lines, due to reaction from the 2k, bare in mind i didnt rub it down to the gel coat, which if i had done, may not have reacted with the previous paint.

A couple of coats of bar coat sealer, prevent this happening as its fast drying. It looks a whitish opaque colour in the tin, but once mixed with hardener and dried it goes clear.

Are you working outside or inside.?

The low temperature may have had an adverse effect on how well the stone chip and top coat cure.

thats my thinking too...the stone chip is a long cure type of coating at the best of times given its elasticity so cold and put on thick and its going to take a good while to cure

I started taking stuff off tonight, its coming off easy where its sticky underneath,

So shouldn't be to bad atleast I noticed it now, not later when engine is in lol.

Pics above are where I got to take the crap off so only the places u dont really see.

Atleast this bit either side is ok and the tops where shocks bolt to are fine too

Even tried flatting the top parts see how hard it is to sand before top coat and is easy,

By the end of weekend this stupid engine bay is gonna be painted and I mean in top coat has well lol. Pics to follow.

I know I got over spray on cables and stuff, dont worry I got replacements for them on spare zed, and the loom gonna re electrical tape them, so wont look like that once finished...

Yeah was outside, and with it so thick I messed up bad lol.

Just gonna remove stonechip from engine bay area, was one of those crazy rust proof ideas that came in my head to spray it in these places thinking it will be hard wearing.

Didnt have it there from new so think its best just take it off and have primer and paint, no stupid stonechip...

Cheers for all the replys.

so do you want these matches or what...this is the second time the poor buggers been threatend with fire. Just get it finnished:winkiss:

Stick at it mate.

Sometimes these things just have to take time.

If you give yourself all the time in the world, you will find that things will start coming together.

Just really need this engine bay done so can get it to paint shop for respray,

Had it booked in before Christmas, but all went wrong.

Thing is bro in law works in a great paint shop and even showed oobumblebeoo on here new ferrari, lambo gallardo, and bentley.

He said 800 to 1000 for job done really nice.

He has painted it twice now before,

But last time we done it in a car workshop I had and we rushed it back together cause I was shutting it down.

Paint came out nice but scratched it up putting lump in rushing, and didnt get to clean everything before putting it back together so engine bay got dirty etc...

Was either rush it back together or leave it there cause had no where else to store car in bits.

Reason im mainly rushing is garage he works in is even mega busy now but its quietest time of year,

And dont wanna be waiting for it forever I want it in and out this year I wanna use the car, and want everything perfect.

Last year car was good but I had scuffed me front bumper and got few marks what stood out to me like a sore thumb.

Now I got

New original 99spec bumper from japan.

Car mad type s skirts,

Brand New 18 inch wheels..

Plus loads bits still to come brand new 99spec rears,

Coilovers, pistons hopefully on the 15th.

Loads to do and spring coming quick lol.

And cant wait to get it all bloody done lol
