Started my car up today to move it for the winter. Car runs fine but is very tappety. Since the engine came out of my old jdm and hasn't been run for any length of time since jan 2009, I kind of expected it to be like this. I feel pretty confident that once she's got a couple of hundred miles done the noise will reduce a lot.

However if it doesn't. How hard is it to change the lifters? Can it be done in the car or would I need to pull the engine. What's involved? I'm assuming plenum off, rocker covers off etc.

I've never done any internal engine work but I'm fairly handy with the spanners.

Engine runs lovely (fair bit of white exhaust smelling smoke, which I expected) but is really loud with the lifters. It sounds like there's a hundred of them horrible monkey things with the symbols banging together..lol

Id like to know that too actually as i actually have a noisy tappet, was thinking of just pulling the heads off my old engine and swapping them over, but i know that will be engine out as its going to be a pain in the butt to remove the manifolds with the engine in.

All because i have a noisy tappet on my passenger side bank lol

can be done in the car without removing heads...cams out and drop them in after soaking them in oil overnight right side up

I'm sure Bri would love to sit down and do one for us tonight, since he such a nice chap :sailor:

they are really expensive, lol ordered a set for my rebuild engine as it has suspect noisy lifters, its cheaper to get them from the states then to get them from nissan uk.

Just changed the cam belt and plenum gasket.. Should have done the bloody things when the engine was out. Just didn't think about it at the time..

Other than being a bit noisy will/can it cause any damage to the engine?

My old Vectra GSi had noisy lifters but I didn't mind that so much cos it hid the noise of the blowing rear manifold...

it shouldnt be a problem have u tried just an oil change for some thing slightly thicker ?

I've not really tried anything yet mate, I changed the oil for magnatec 10w/40 when I put the engine in, the car hasn't been on the road for 3 years. I'm thinking that a good run will sort it (fingers crossed)

needs a good canning down the motorway for 20 miles or so Dave...followers bleed down if left idle and normaly pump back up when up to normal operating temps.A start up for a couple of mins a week is not enough.
