Has or does anyone here know of a zed powered by an RB26 Engine in this forum?

and how much of space is there in the bay after the swap?

plus what is needed for such conversion?

I have seen this a few times online but have not really looked into it, have a browse on google mate

There's obviously quite a lot of work involved its tight in the engine bay as the Rb is a lot longer than the vg engine

You would need to mount the Rb engine n subframe to the 300 then

Custom wiring loom

Custom rad pipes down pipes and exhaust, try n fit the rad in, space the bonnet as it would more than like sit a little higher, you may have to knock the bulk head back,

Wire up things like clocks, fuel pump ect ect

Plus then you want to make sure you get an r33 Rb engine as these use a long nose crank which drive the oil pump better if not the short nose crank needs a collar fitting as these don't have as much contact on the oil pump, in turn this shatters the oil pump at high rpm,

Also with the Rb the oil pump is the weak part so you would need to upgrade and the greddy or Nito are around £1000

Then with the new oil pump fitted you need to fit restrictors in the block and a head drain kit back to the sump,

All this before you think about tuning one, a lot of work involved

what he said ^^^ plus there is a guy/member on here from Birmingham way he has got a car and does it

Standing by for the innevitable 'Why would you want to.....the VG is amazing.....the RB is over rated.....as is the 2JZ.....all of these super tuners are wrong.....don't forget Bonneville.....the zed was Nissan's masterpiece (hence why it dominates Motorsport today) etc etc yada yada'

lol yeah il bite, dont really see the point by the time you've sorted everything out financially and time wise what will you have really gained? yeah the vg has its weak points what doesnt, as pointed out above the rb does have its weak points aswel. all in reality you will have gained is an engine with a different layout of cylinders, which has slightly more room either side sits too high but hell thankgod though cos when it blows up cos its almost as old as the vg your removing theres lots of parts available and a larger group of experienced tuners. if your going to do something differnt what about a twin turbo or super charged ls1? i dont dislike the idea of an rb engined zed, far from it its just if your going to do something like this youve got to do it properly with a freshly built engine, which in reality unless your chasing monster monster power your pocket and free time arnt going to gain very much from the conversion.

if your doing it to go faster then its probably not the best route, but if your doing it for the fun of it, and because you can then i say go for it :thumbup1:

im waiting to see the first zed crossed with a leaf... our leaf demo is faster off the line then anything else we've had in.

bet its not as fast as slick petes dog ha

My thoughts too - whatever the merits of one engine over the other, I just could not justify the extra work and cost involved.....

.....but a V8 conversion..... Hmmm!!!

Richard:laugh:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

It's the same old cost vs reward argument though isn't it. Granted the VH45DE sounds awesome and no doubt low down grunt is fantastic but I know that I'd end up taking it down the forced induction route and costs would spiral

back to the RB point, there are so many established UK based RB build specialists now that have track proven records backed up by TA, 1/2 mile records and the like that if you wanted to minimise the risk/cost of 'experimental' power then you have access to the available resources to do it

I agree to a certain extent that stock for stock, engine for engine (not car for car I might add) that the two engines are very similar in performance, each with their own pros and cons but when you start going above 600bhp there really isn't the on hand expertise in the UK to plan, build, support and maintain a VG to the same levels of reliability as the RB and it's really that simple

I'm not saying that the RB is bulletproof, because I think that that particular 90's myth has been well and truly busted but the preventatitive developments that have gone into mitigating against weak RB bottom ends/cooling etc is far more established than that for the VG

again that's just my opinion and I'm not agreeing or dis-agreeing with the whole cost aspect because it isn't cheap whichever way that you look at it, but maybe some of the lessons learnt along the way could then be applied to improve the VG preventative measures

1JZ is the way to go if i killed mine id think about this swap bullet proof :thumbup1:

Great and very enriching wealth of information there gents :)

my whole idea was regarding creating space in the bay. to ease the burden of working on Belts Tubs etc... if it is not saving space and will be as tight a Dogs &o((ox. then there is not point really... unless I go a radical way and Mate two 1.3 Suzuki Motorbikes engines.. and not even sure they will fit in that bay....

I somehow thought RB should be fine since the floor plan of R32 and Z32 is the same from what a friend mentioned... though his Z32 had some madness done to it over the years.

started with trimming and welding the bay to fit a 4L V8 from a LS400.

then went with an SL55 amg in his Z32 which I believe he is still using in the middle east with the charged 5.5 V8

last I heard he was Looking for a RT10 Viper engine to try fit in there somehow...

my main idea is to be able to sort things with ease in there... and not needing to take the whole thing off to do what ever needs doing due to the claustrophobic space..

just saw the JD V8 5L. looks like similar with space clearance..

could a 2.8L BMW straight-6 be mated to these cars? and with Chain timing, guess will be a decent route... though not a big fan of straight-6 on standard form... will sure need playing with mods and my main concerns will be on

1/ will the Box connect to BMW Block?

2/ will the BM Block stick too high on the ZED's Bay?

Might revise this after going through above responses one more time ;)

BMW engine in a zed ****ing stupid.

RB G/Box bellhousing bolts straight onto the zed box making it an easy swap.

I know there is a current RB build going on however dont think it is on this forum.

Howeevr dont do it cos the VG is the best engine in the world what a load of trash. Do it be different dont conform to the norm with a VG engine that thinks they are pushing 500 when really its 300

the reason i said BMW, is due to the fact i have a 2.8L 6cyl, and a 4.4 V8 both with less than 50k on clocks.. and the 4.4 is twin turbo with torque to rip the tarmac out of the highway... as it is coming out of a 7series... so on a zed will sure get the desired effect in every possible way. but I am certain someone will tell me it will stick out of the bay like an american Big-block... so thought the straight 6...

to be honest, I have had few zeds in the past. and 2 of them were driven all year round. so thinking of a BMW that is good for 250K+ on the chain seems more logical. and with regular oil changes should be more than fine... the pairing German to Japanese is like interracial P0%N... either love it or Loath it...

the current thought is on few projects... one of them will commence soon.

either the Zed. or a a Kawasaki ZX12 engine on a smart for TWO. or an old Mini with a V5 golf engine. or the BIG ONE, a 60's VW Camper split screen with a 3.2 Porsche engine...

since the last project went sweet with a G430 benz converted to 600 V12 AMG Bi-Turbo. another one is on the menu.

Either way, the Z32 engine will more likely be rebuilt and stored away for future classic preservation and maybe even fitting it in a speed boat one day..

As above but be aware a friend of mine has owned several Radicals over the years and he's on his 3rd one now (SR3's rather than SR8's granted) however the principal is still the same. They have to be rebuilt every so many hours of track time (40 hours I believe off the top of my head) and it needs continuous maintenance. Again I can't recall exactly but the SR8 puts out about 450'ish and sits in a vehicle weighing around 650-700kg so maybe not the most practical for a lardy arse such as the zed

Nice big forced induction V8 yes or if you're going down the BMW powered route (and if cost isn't such an issue) maybe consider the S85 V10 from the M5

I hear you there.

the V10 thought was on the menu. though was thinking of getting an engine from a written off Audi R8 V10... or an american 5.7L Block...

thoughts are endless. I just need to put head down and get on with one of them ideas :)

Many many THANKS for the great literature provided and the low down on various technical areas :)

btw: is anyone here a fan of Split screen VW Campers? wondered about fitting water cooled engine on the back of one of these... Pro's and con's!!

i recently met a couple who had an old vw camper . all original except for the subaru engine in the back . a real stealth sleeper

Now that is one of those kinds that get me going

i spoke to a guy few years back, he had his powered by an SL 350 engine...

and saw one on my way to Holland overtake me in Belgian highways while i was doing 150mph.. when I caught him in a service station... couldn't communicate... as I am not well informed when it comes to the Spanish Language... car was on a Catalonia Plates..

150+mph VW camper....jeez' the owner must be off his meds'

Here's a V10 Viper engined VW camper that I found with a quick browse using the googles on tinterwebz'

I remember years ago, didn't Top Gear take Jamie Oliver's VW camper around Dunsfold (Porker engine I think)

Wow, a V10 viper lump is a menacing thought with the amount of torque these things produce. I remember a Local who had the RT10 when they came out. that car was a beast just ticking over.. let alone with the right amount of clear tarmac ahead of it.. but with an 8L displacement, i guess a pony goat will have that level of madness. got to say though Bhp per/Liter and mpg on american cars is just a disaster. unless a hemi block is strapped to it :D

most of the time I think 5.7L V8's then a 2L jap can do it better ;)

That Camper was like Usain Bolt overtaking marathon pace... and the spoiler/splitter/low-ride/wheel arches to fit those tyres made the thing look mighty... not forgetting the multi tone paint back then that was Only available on TVR's

guess the guy put some serious investment on that. as it was flying. and didn't sound close to Redline overtaking me... temptation to give it a bit of gas and see him on my rear view mirror had to be suppressed, so I can enjoy the van out of comic books

I will have to youtube that Top-Gear episode for sure :)

That would be scarey like a loaf of bread with a bottle rocket strapped to it
