Tomorrow will see me starting on the tranformation of Bob's slicktop from a fast road car to a much more extreme track car.

As with the original project to create the car i'm delighted to be involved in this next round of modifications.

Bob brought the car(as a rolling shell) to me on Saturday and we spent some time discussing the work to be done. I also took the opportunity of making a start on seat mounts/position while i had Bob to trial fit.:smartass:

Being securely located in your preferred driving position is an essential part of quick lap times.

The brief for the revised car is to create a competent track/strip/sprint/hillclimb 300ZX.

Many of the events to be entered specify the car to be road legal. In reality the car will be trailered to events so the need for creature comforts is minimal.

There are three goals to achieve...

1. More power.

2. Less mass(weight)

3 More downforce.

The combination of these three elements will be more speed. And its speed that counts

The big news on the more power front is the installation of a full Kyle Puckett built engine. formerly located in the 2+2 that Madmax(on this forum) had built and now owned by Bob

That isnt part of my job thank goodness.

Less weight and more downforce are tho and tomorrow i will be making a start on the weight saving task.

I will basically follow the same route as I have done on my own car and also what forum members Jaffa and EssBee have done. We all use the lightest car to begin with ... the 2 seater slicktop.

So hopefully those of you with an interest in the motorsport side and of going faster will find something of interest in this unfolding tale.:winkiss:

Those of you who are more concerned with modified lights. leds in everything, amps, subs, woofers and retrimmed interiors should stop reading now:whistling:

Initial pics and more detailed spec to follow tomorrow......

Pete, as the advert said, Not forgetting the powerful disc brakes lol.

Can't wait to see this next development stage unfold. The updates on this Zed along with Jaffas are always anticipated eagerly and enjoyed thoroughly. Keep the posts coming Pete :cool3:

Well its the end of day 1.

I decided to start the worst jobs first, so today I have spent several hours removing the black sound deadening, all excess metal brackets have been cut off too.

It doesnt get more boring really.

Then I had my coffee break sat in one of the new seats..(my one..on the pass side:whistling:)

that cheered me up.:cool3:

So here are some boring pics and than a couple of the new seats.

In keeping with the project these are Extreme seats. Tillett B6F FIA approved side mount seats.FIa side mount brackets with dinamica suede panels and extra mount points high up the side and on the headrest..

i have already done the install for Bob to his prefered height and leg stretch with a custom fabricated mount.

the passenger side will have the side mount brackets bolted straight to the floor same as my car. It will be low and well back needing a lightweight footrest installing for pass support.

More chipping and scraping tomorrow.................................

I have just been informed that there will be a Sard rear wing coming later to fit.

Its huge I think:1eye:

cheers Paul. Brakes were sorted earlier in the summer when Bob acquired Madmax's car. He alrady had Stoptech fronts on the slicktop and now has Stoptech rears too. all fitted with Ferodo DS3000 race pads.

Well done, not a fun task but good to get it out of the way. Tillet seats are nice, price tag to match though!

Im not paying so no problem for me!!:smartass:

So is Bob going for the full round of Time Attack next year?

If you have a large rear wing is it going to affect top speed with the friction of extra downforce? Are you going to use any of those spoilers at the side of the front bumper to keep the front down?

Bob took me out for a session at Snetterton a couple of weeks ago, the car is bonkers fast in a straight line, sticks round the corners and sounds amazing! A combination of engine, whistling turbos and a dog box, can't beat it:rockon:

He has not decided. costs are eye watering!

Clearly a large rear wing set at an angle to create some downforce is going to have a "drag" factor on the car.

We should have enough extra power to maintain current top speeds or even exceed them in the new engine..

Front donwforce to my mind is not such an issue. We want to clean up the underside to allow a smoooth airflow under the splitter/car. Im not convinced about adding canards. We have discussed it briefly.

Yep it is quick. Glad you enjoyed it.

I have just got used to it. Next time out it should be even faster:scared:

Yes I know!!!:detective:

OOOh nice windows

Yep they sure are. Fitting is on the cards soon. Just need to finish cutting, grinding and painting before I fit them.:winkiss:

Great progress Pete. Are you keeping a track on the weight saving or just going for a final weight?
