Evening chaps,

Some of you may have seen a thread on here posted by the previous owner - after the engine turns off, a small leak was happening towards the rear of the engine.

Now, the leak is getting worse. Driving home from Squires this evening (pics to follow seperately) the car seemed to be getting pretty hot and a hissing noise was coming from the passenger side of the engine. After getting home, there was more steam than normal as well.

I'm taking it to Zedworld next Tuesday but I'm a bit worried that the car isnt going to make it!

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Alex

Strip back the wires outof the way and you will be able to see the offending hose.

I personally wouldn't drive all way to zedworld with how much its leaking.

Remember, if water is getting out, then air is getting in and it doesnt take long for a vg engine to overheat.

problem is I don't have any real mechanical knowledge or training or anything like that so I dont really want to get stuck right in and attempt to do it myself... unless I just see if a local garage to me is able to have a look at it short notice. Guessing its something that a "normal garage" might be able to do without too much issue?

Thing is, until today, the car didnt overheat or anything whilst driving, it just leaked and caused a little bit of steam after the engine was off?

Yeah valid point mate...

When were you thinking if you're able to have a look at it? Or would it just be best if I take it to the "normal garage" thats about 5 minutes from my house?

Cheers

ok cheers, I'll give em a ring in the morning and let you know.

If not, what day/time are you talking and how much would you want for sorting?

  • Author

nice one, appreciate that. I've got 4 garages to ring in the morning within about 15 minutes of my house so I'll give them a try and see...

  • Author

local garage is going to have a look at it tomorrow for me and should be able to get it done, fingers crossed!

Just been out to test this and whereas it will run cold if the aircon is lower than about 21 degrees, any hotter than that and the temperature doesnt change. :helpsmilie:

Going into the garage tomorrow morning to get it looked at - might need to ring Jeff and postpone my visit as dont want to risk driving it that far until I'm happy this is sorted!

could it be that the heater matrix is bypassed and this is why its not getting hot ?mine was bypassed and the hose was linked out between the wipers just behind the engine causing steam because of the bodge job done

  • Author

did that cause the engine to get hot though and it to leak water on the floor?

yer water was running in and down the heater matrix hoses and was not helping with the overheating did get a lot of steam as well!!

but I did put my overheating down to bad coolant/air in system and blocked pipes as well

  • Author

ahh ok. cheers.

car is going in tomorrow so will see what the deal is...

  • Author

cheers mate. At least its only 5 minutes down the road... lol.

Hoping its all ok so I can still make my Zedworld trip on Tuesday but may have to postpone :(

Quick update, just rung the garage having dropped car off at half 8 this morning.

Their response was to basically complain at me for 5 minutes for owning a car that was too complicated and difficult to work on and there wasnt much space in the engine bay...

He then mentioned the word "gasket" and I felt my bank account instantly start crying! They dont actually know what the problem is yet - although they have replicated the fault - so going to let me know once they figure out exactly what it is. I did mention about it possibly being the Turbo coolant feed pipe but he's not sure yet

Cancelled my Zedworld trip next week though, for now at least until she's not so poorly!

  • Author

thats what a couple of people have said its likely to be and thats what I said to him, although he's not got back to me yet with exactly what it is

head gaskets to fail but kinda rare ... i would be heading towards the turbo water lines .. or any of them to matter of fact

both sides of pipe work can be got at quit easy just involves taking the two upper hard boost pipes off beside the plenum

bk of the engine and under the plenum well thats kinda big'ish job

Edited by MarkDerby

yeah my money would be on the turbo water line or any of those little blighters. they get hot and brittle behind there which the battery out its way easier.

turbo or heater matrix feed

I'd be more worried about the garage not understanding it and charging you for a load of unnecessary work.

Get it transported to Zedworld, be cheaper in the long run!

  • Author

Transport of about 120 miles to Zedworld probably sounds easier than it is in reality :/

How much would it normally cost for some sort of flatbed or something with a trailer to get it that far?

Unless obviously the Garage comes back and says exactly what it is and its not going to be expensive... we'll see, fingers crossed

Sounds to me you need to get your car removed from that garage asap.

Ive got a mate in knotgingley who's good with 300zx. I'll try contact him for ya.

He'd be alot cheaper than a garage.

At least I've got the owners reassurance that he wont order any parts or do any repairs until he knows exactly what it is and I've given him the ok to sort it!

Appreciate the offer Dave - but either way, will see what they say tomorrow before I do anything else. Cheers
