Genuine disabilities discussed on the 300zx forum

A reprehensible and bigoted attitude that has let this forum down today, some of the representatives of the forum may want to take a hard look at themselves in the light of how a simple thread was hijacked but then even worse dealt with in an ineffectively weak manner, the forum needs to revaluate its position here and make a clear and correct stand.

Shame on you all involved

We are here to be accounted for and if we did wrong then yes tell us and we will try and fix it. Our Mods do a great job and in my last week as head Moderator I take my hat of to all of them in there outstanding work but its not easy to be perfect on every decision we are human and do make mistakes. So in what way Jeff do you think we should of handeled this thread as a long and respected member we value your views.

I have as you mentioned been a long term member here....well since Nico days ( long, long ago ), I do not profess to be an expert on been a mod or committe member far from it but what I am fairly good at is been a compasionate human being and tolerating anti-disabled comments with what seemed like a slow and weak response is against my understanding of what is right, I am no advocate of human rights per se as they get abused, but undefending the whole disability culture is offensive and thats what effectively happened. Yes of course the argument for wasters, benefit fraudsters etc. still stands but as soon as the thread became offensive it was time to become involved effectively, simply closing a thread but leaving it readable was pointless, ineffective or nonsensical, choose one, anyone.

On a ligher not respect to you Gary for the work you have done, well done

i do have to agree with jeff here i dont often pipe up and spoil the apple cart but i do feel the whole subject was allowed to get out of hand and was delt with poorly in its wake.

Thanks Jeff and I have gone through the thread again and to clean it up would leave very little of it left so I will remove it and ask the thread starter to open a new thread.

I don't often comment but I did on that occasion as it looked like a few people needed a reality check. To be honest most of the things that were said seemed more naive than bigotted so I wouldn't get too excited about it. Not sure you can particularly blame the mods because if they had closed the thread and then removed it, someone somewhere would have been banging on about freedom of speech and asking 'why the heavy hand of moderation?'

your damned if you do and damned if ya dont lol

this thread seems pointless TBH, it seems to me to be a thread to cause unrest and will be discussed

as said in another thread, i closed it and was supposed to clean and reopen, but i was sidetracked with my son and forgot about it, seems to me that a quick pm would have sufficed

Thats what happens on an open forum. A topic sparks a debate and then opinions are aired normally without fear of being told your opinion is wrong, which is what has happened in this instance.

Exactly! left very little, the op must of felt robbed, but a new thread from the op is a good idea.

Not at all you have elected to do the job and all you been asked to do is that

Tell you what, the weight you were on about loosing the other day will be falling off with all the back pedaling!

Before any of my bold text comments above are taken in an offensive or trouble making way, they are not been written with that in mind, adding (lol )to the end of sarcastic comments to get away with them is often used to defend them, I have not done that here as they are just a clear response to the thread reply.

Not disagreeing with that Gary, without mods there would be anarchy.

i was just wondering why the thread cannot be split leaving the original subject matter and closing the off topic sections of it in another thread?

that way nothing is deleted , nobody can argue over moderation , the guys original question is left in place.

Hi Gary, Bigman, Jeff and everyone else with concerns regarding this thread.

The moderators have begun a discussion on the subject - which some of the committee have also had input on as well. This topic has generated some strong opinions and some negative comments (I am personally mindful of this, since I fear that something I wrote may have contributed to the thread sliding off topic. And for that, if I have caused upset or offence; then please accept my apologies as I in no way intended for that to happen). Consequently we are considering the appropriate actions and will hopefully come to a conclusion shortly.

Thanks for bringing the matter to our attention though,

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Hi Guys

I dont think there is any reason to discuse this in the first place seeing as a car forum!!! and the moderators are compromised if they do or dont reply.

I do appreciate off topic threads but it's fuel for fire undermining the forum as a whole its bad enough with bogus users posting

Just me view

funny old places forums are and ive been here long enough to notice over the years that its users can and do become a bit over sensitive over certain subjects and then months down the line not comment at all on a similiar subject as if its not there...sometimes a normal discussion can just be a small part of a larger catalyst that happens outside this forum and causes members and users to fire up and blow things out of context from the original thread subject resulting in what we have here. My thoughts on this thread are atm too varied to allow any imput and not fuel an otherwise still smouldering fire...

It should be closed..End of

Jeff is making a good point but as Bob said its probably more down to ignorance rather than malice, I think Alan (StellaZ) did the right thing by closing the thread... I hope this issue doesnt put anyone off continuing to post here :)

We can all learn a bit from this

We never stop learning mate, anybody that knows it all knows nothing.

Think its a bit OTT to be honest. I'm not disabled myself but my father was both physically and mentally disabled and to be honest I didn't find any of it offensive. I hear words like spaz, cripple, brain dead, retarded all the time and I don't get mad about it.

I know in life that people won't agree with everything I say and I also know that not everybody in life understands every aspect of every other persons life.

For christs sake its only the bloody internet calm down.

thanks for starting this thread jeff i agree with you on this if it was a other car forum they would deal with that asap and remove the bad stuff and give them a warning

Having only just caught up on this, i read the first post and a few replies and everything was on track at that point, ive just caught up on the rest of the thread, and to be honest, we have been ear bitten before in the past for moderating threads, we either get moaned at for moderating, or we get moaned at for not moderating, there are a few replies in there that are border line insulting. and ill be PM'ing the offending people, the rest were just a discussion with people's personal views on the subject matter so not really off topic, to say we should of moderated it as it went off topic is a bit harsh when we have had other posts go completely off topic with not so much as a mention before let alone a separate thread regarding it, i understand that being disabled is seen as a sensitive subject matter, but we have been accussed (and very recently) of not allowing free speach and "heavy handed moderation", so which is it? free speach but piss people off? or moderate and get shit thrown at us?

I do however think it should of been less insulting and that should of been dealt with while the thread was still open and viewable to the general member base, but we are only human and not every time do we spot what is actually taking place in time to deal with it effectively, we are after all only volunteers

Im not trying to brush this under the carpet far from it, but there are certain posts thats will always flair up very opinionated responses, including but not limited to religion, politics, benefits...ect.

May i take this opportunity to remind people that this is first and foremost a car forum, we tolerate off topic posts, but what we wont tolerate and im surprised no one picked up on things, is personal attacks directed at people due to what ever circumstances they have in life.

A PM to draw it to our attentions if you think we missed the point, should of been suffice, instead of slating the entire moderating team / running of the forum, for failing to miss something. (im sure you have missed things in your line of work before jeff)

A lot of us are busy at this present moment organizing things for the club and although we try our best to be leniant in certain aspects, not all the time we do we make the correct call, we are after all, only human.

Never complained about it going off topic

The moderation was weak and ineffective, the border line offensive material as you describe it was left open

I do however think it should of been less insulting

Kettle, pot.... you have replied using the words piss and shit

and that should of been dealt with while the thread was still open and viewable to the general member base, but we are only human and not every time do we spot what is actually taking place in time to deal with it effectively, we are after all only volunteers

no argument from me there

Im not trying to brush this under the carpet far from it,

Why suggest dealing with it by pm then?

With power comes great responsibility

(im sure you have missed things in your line of work before jeff)

Anyone with an internet or business presence should expect to have occassions that extra attention is required

This very likely applies to many of the people here, participating in the club be it in an official capacity or not, it is what makes the club/ forum work,

None of the comments I have made above should be taken in an offensive or in a trouble making way, they are not been written with that in mind, just response to the thread reply.
