New LED Rear Quad Lights In Carbon Fiber Andy Isherwood - The Whole Story!!

I've always thought the 300ZX rear lights were way behind the stunning lines of the rest of the car. A bit of a mid eighties design arcing back to the 70's trans am look and for me a little too fussy. Why couldn't they make the rears as modern and sexy as the fronts? so began my quest to do something a little more interesting and my inspiration was coming from the traditional sports car look of twin red circles either side i.e Ferrari, Corvette, Skyline.

The question was Where from? and how?!! so, I started looking around until one day at The Goodwood Breakfast Club I came across a KTM Crossbow!! Bingo!! Just what wanted!! Now I just had to source them........

All I could see was that they were made by Hella. Then I found them everywhere.......

By 2008 I had tracked them down and bought a set. Wow!! Very nice bit of kit and fully approved for road use with 21w brake lights. I was so happy with the modern crystal look of the lenses and the sharp light emitted by the led bulbs. Happy as Larry!!

Now for the panel!! Actually, that's too much heart ache to go into but the short version is £900 and 3 years later and several lets downs along the way and i have my carbon fiber panel.

I think I've managed to give the car a look worthy of it's other styling strengths and it confuses even more people now. For me it looks less fussy than the nissan efforts of both 89 and 99 (those bloody tram lines!!) and when they are lit up oooooooooooooooh! Very nice!!

Anyway here's some piccies - Some with centre badge and some with out.

Doh! joely just pointed out this thread is in the journal section! Can a mod ease move to geneal chat?!

Cheers

Andy

Tis done mate!!

That looks superb Andy - I was intrigued when you showed me the pics on your phone at the last Red Lyon meet. But seeing the bigger pictures on here does them a lot more justice. Looks like a lot of work has gone into that but it has definitely paid off mate; I cannot wait to see the car in the flesh at the next meet!!

Richard:thumbup1:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Looks very Good:thumbup1:

Think I remember seeing your car at Windsor last year or the year before?. Even better in the flesh.

Have you got different exhausts now, what are those?

Cheers

Matt

They look the business.Me likey:thumbup1:

It's ok just not my cup of tea. I suppose I really like the 300 lights as is and not trying to hide the fact it's a 300,

Nice finish tho

As a 'semi' purist, I don't normally like this mod, but this one seems to look very tasty. Most zeds I see with this sort of rear light setup have lots of fibreglass bits glued to the bodywork but yours is bob on to my taste in styling... I wouldn't say I think it looks better than 99 specs but what you have achieved works so well as a 'package' imo.

I'm a less is more person but in this case I think it looks better in the pics with the badge fitted. Look forward to seeing it in person... even though our paths haven't crossed for sometime now!?

Nice one Richard, I wondered why no one bothered commenting!! I didn't that the journal section was a no-reply section!!

it would be good to meet up again bud, maybe we should set up a Sunday meet for lunch at the red lyon or get craig on the case?

Thanks for the compliment.

Cheers Matt! I forgot about the windsor car Show! Have we missed it this year?

The Exhausts are custom made stainless steel cat back system with in 2.25/2.5 inch pipe with H section and twin centre section mufflers and spiral mufflers in the rear boxes. The tips are made to measure slash cut and staggered to follow the profile of the bumper. (I'm also selling it very soon!)

Thanks Joely, Yeah it's been a while. You doing any shows? Are you on HJC?

That looks great, a real quality job!! Think I prefer it with the badge too. It just adds a little something

Very nicley done there matey, looks quite modern a nd stunning,

I was thinking the same thing as i have the strosec rear with the fiat coupe rear lights and the back looks just a plain red, my idea was just putting a sheet of carbon over the back

but hey you have put pedal to the metal and gone forward and by god the results speaks for itself

well done

Exactly as Joely says, I couldn't have put it better myself... would I have those lights on mine?? No, but Nice work Andy :)

I too am not a big fan of the round light look but that is one of the best conversions I have seen! Nice job! :)

I think the stock lights (especially in 99 spec) actually suit the lines of the zed at the rear - the smooth width of the rear acually lends itself more to how the stock lights run IMO.

still - great idea & well done!!

Very much my thoughts ^^^^^^^^

I do like the broadness of the red stock lights at night, think it gives an appearance of a low wide sports car

I shall be having a closer look Andy at JAE :detective:

I like it alot Andy and although you showed me the new led lights a while ago, which i thought looked stunning compared to the older style like mine, i wasnt sure how it would look with the carbon panel, i know you had a few issues with the guys who made it, but has come together really well, look forward to seeing them in the flesh.

The Towing eyes look great too

Not my cup of tea, but certainly abmire the effort that has been put in. Very professional looking.

Have you thought about getting z badge made up that matches the size of the light units themselves.

Thanks Paul, each to their own. for me the 99 specs would look better with the tram lines removed - a pointless bit of decoration. refreshing the lense material and chrome inserts would have been enough.

Yes mate I know what you mean. We can do a side by side at JAE if you like?

Cheers Graham, yes the amount I got messed about was unbelievable! Got there is the end though. Yours still look good. You can "smoke" your outer lenses in red to get a similar look. A faint red with the chrome behind will look nice. I've seen it done before. Aha! you spotted the towing eyes! That's a SWB only option I'm afraid!.....

BTW any joy with those LRD speedo/rev counter lights?

Andy

That looks awesome mate! A nice modern touch definately! :thumbup1:

Cheers Rich!

As others have said, i very much admire the effort that's been put in and the finished result is the best iv seen as far as round lights go.

Just not my cup of tea sorry, i absolutely agree with phutumsch one of my favourite sights is them strips of light glowing at night :cool3:

Job well done nonetheless matey :thumbup1:

Gaz you are gay!

Oi Wendy, that's rich coming from a guy who has just spent a grand on putting four sore red sphincters on the back of his 300zx :-)

I asked this question once at the pub.. question being what is the opinion on round rear rear lights.. and I got shot down (told to get ma coat etc). So, where was your voice.. why didn't you speak up...

and jokingly.. why can I see the fence thru the rear screen in one of your pics, why isnt your bonnet raised??

I dont normally like the rear conversion but i must say the setup you have is very very nice. Loving the Carbon panel too :)

Lol! I think at the time it was top secret or I just wasn't listening to you!! i had the bonnet down as there was a spec of dust on one of my throttle bodies.
