Hi there...

I'm wondering if anybody has done or considered a decent diesel conversion for the Z?

I've always wanted 1, I've had 3 200sx's a supra and a few other "fun" cars over the years. The only reason I haven't brought 1 recently is because I have to travel a fair few miles and fuel economy is a big thing lately.

Sooooo... My question is... Are there any decent diesel engines that will fit easily enough into a Z and will the cost outweigh the savings?

Cheers people

:-)

There are some good torquey' TD oil burner lumps out there these days, so quite possible that the difference wouldn't be too obvious 90% of the time

I reckon a BMW 335D conversion would be nice and torquey, not the same top end rush of course, but whether it would fit and whether it would be worth it are much harder questions.

LOL... so the answer is yes there are some engines out there now but "now" is the critical word meaning "NEW" and so not cheap, along with the conversion, unless you are a bit of a mechanical whizkid you will have to pay and I'm just wondering how much that will cost.....

why not just get one and run it for as long as you think it would have cost you to do the conversion (but in fuel) and then sell it.... :) ...

or just get one and use it as a weekender / fare-weather car, that will save you a packet on insurance with the limited miles and you won't have to worry about the daily drive killing your Zed.

I think if you can afford the engineering to do it, yes there are engines that would fit. Performance would be pretty embarassing unless you used a recent engine such as the BMW 335 - but that engine by itself will cost more than a secondhand Zed! Then you would have to fit it..... Megger fiddling around.

Even a straight forward diesel conversion tends to be about £2k by the time you sort everything out that buys quite a lot of petrol!

a 300 and economical defo dont go together lol

My statement was in response to the above ^^^^ rather than the OP's original question of what would fit and would it be cost effective

the point that I was trying to make (as a side note/reading between the lines) was that there are diesel engines available today that offer comparable performance to a 20 year old VG30DETT, if performance were to become a defining factor further on down the line

surely a gas conversion would be cheaper and easier, with no loss in performance (lpg has an octane rating of 101ron iirc).

a gas coversion would be cheaper and easier as you can either buy a self fit kit from http://autogas-lpg.co.uk/conversion-kit/264-stag-300-premium-6cyl-conversion-kit-0250.html or pay to have it fitted fitting a diesel itself can be costly and diesel at nearly £1.40 where lpg cost 68p litre so lpg all the way ...as i dont use my z every day ..i run a v8 landie with lpg does me fine

Rich its 112octane and is more resistant to detonation. A gas conversion is the best option.Ill get round to doing my zed 1 day:biggrin:

So your saying with an LPG you get no loss in performance?

are you serious?

why the **** are you all still buying petrol (I don't count as I get my Petrol given to me - I can't share any more info than that!)

The problem with lpg is that its had bad reportings in the past due to poor installations and awful tuning and the outlay of cost can run into the thousands.I do lpg conversions and only use prins injection systems (the best). You can actually gain more power with the right setup and properly tuned and have good reliability.:sorcerer:

you running it on yours lee? got rolling roads of before and after on any vehicles?

really interesting.

What's the cost of the full works Lee, just out of interest?

Just called BRC in Trowbridge, they quote £1600 + VAT. But need to see vehicle first as they are not sure if the can fit the kit in the engine bay of the Zed.

They have refused M5's etc.. as engine bay to packed to get injector rails, new ecu etc.. fitted on the space available.

Please somebody do this (LPG there zed) though I suspect it would only be practical on a LWB due to the extra space over a SWB, otherwise you'd end up with something that looks like this....

Howdo chief.......i knew it was 100 and something :)

worst idea ever???? i think its a good idea. it would be cheaper to do than re-build a z engine if yours goes tits up (if you do it yourself). you can get a good running 6cyl diesel bmw lump for good money even with running gear. i think its a very good idea and if my car wasent a track car now i would do it myself as i think it would be rather easy.

Because you are spoiling a classic by putting an oil burner in it. Diesel is the fuel of the Devil

but LPG prices are rising much faster than petrol and diesel prices.

Basically they say if a car does 30mpg on petrol, it will do 20mpg on LPG.

So at 72p a litre for LPG, and £1.45 a litre for petrol your looking half the price for the fuel, but only 66% of the MPG.

lets talk miles per litre to keep it simple.

6 miles per litre in petrol = £1.45 for 6 miles.

say 4 miles per litre in LPG = £0.75 for 4 miles. or £1.13 for 6 miles roughly.

Difference is 32p over 6 miles, thats just over 5p a mile saving.

With conversions around £1600, you would need to drive the car 32,000 miles at 75 pence a litre to break even - which means spending £6,000 on fuel before you start saving any money.

Anyone here imagine themselves using £7600 of Petrol in the lifetime of owning their Zed's?
