I've just been browsing Z1 and came across this:

http://www.z1motorsports.com/product_info.php?products_id=3986

I used to run a twin filter setup, though the single MAF, but it idled quite roughly, although after doing some research there's mention of fitting an idle assist that balances the air out across the two sides of the engine to avoid lumpy idling.

However this setup looks quite good - the ECU doesn't need mapping like it does with some other twin solutions, and the description claims it's pretty much plug-and-play, and also easily reversible.

Anyone running one? I noticed (adl) phoenix started a thread recently about where to buy one.

Andrew g has this and I've been in his zed with this fitted it's a fantastic mod

that would be a good mod for moving the maf to behind the dump valves, i was thinking of getting some atmos dump valves and sticking the maf after them so it still meters the air correctly. i was wonder how best to do it, but i think this would be a good thing to use, that way you could use duel maf's one for each side.

i've got one arriving this week but im getting the short ram version to move the intakes into the stock smic position, as i have a huge FMIC so not much space for a conventional setup, will let you know if its any good.

there is about a 2 week wait on them as i think they get them direct from selin.

I fitted a Selin Dual MAF Translator and dual intake elbow kit along with a pair of HKS filters in the car.

The setup replaced the single MAF and HKS filter setup I had before. I had to make no changes to the ECU in

order to use the Selin, it is a plug and play upgrade.

You can read about the Selin kit here:

http://www.selindesign.net/electronics.html

The install was pretty straight forward and took about 2 hours to carry out.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the results. The car picks up much quicker than before, with

faster throttle response and better acceleration.

Getting rid of the restrictive intake T piece which has each bank of cylinders fighting for air seems to be the

key and you can see the sort of gains that are being reported on dynos with the Selin setup.

The picture shows the install of the Selin Translator, dual intake elbow kit along with the HKS filters (the black

box with blue silicon pipes is part of the HKS EVC).

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

I know of a HKS twin filter setup for sale with two MAFs, about £160 iirc.

Thanks for the write-up Andy, I found the Greg Dupree comments quite an interesting read, with some surprising gains to be found even for relatively stock Zs. Something that's got me thinking (and saving!)...

Baz you have PM :)

I have just bought this kit, after meeting & talking to Graham last year. Can't wait to get it fitted, just need a 2nd Apexi filter.

CZP had them in stock and arrived with everything else I'd just ordered. :thumbup1:

I've gone a slightly different route. Again, dual intake the same as Andrews above but with Apexi filters. Instead of the selin, I'll be running an AEM EMS with MAP sensor. Obviously this ain't a plug and play like the selin but made sense for me. I'll let u know how it goes when it hits the dyno.

I've read a lot about the selin setup, all of which sounds very positive. I think Andrew is spot on in that the key is to ditch the T-piece. I think even the other type of 'dual' intake is a bit restrictive. It's really just a single intake with twin filters

This is something im going to invest in once i have got the zed back from Jimmer.

Great bit of kit

Nick should meet up sometime, heard about your re-build from Jimmer. How long before you pick her up?

Think I'm next in line for Jim's magic touch.

Yeah that sounds cool bud. Ive been given an estimated finish time for the build of mid july, itching to get it back

Interesting kit, so could this replace the traditional Q45 maf for high powered Z's?

From the research ive done, the Z32 MAF is capable of measuring MORE air than the Q45 and the Mustang Mafs (from what ive found on TT.net and 300zxclub.com)

picked mine up last week

Interesting as I think a lot on here are off the opinion Q45 being 10mm bigger will flow more air than 1 z32 one?

Those of you with this kit already installed - do you have the filters arranged like Andrew's photo (that is, with the 90 degree elbows and the filters pointing towards the front of the car) or have any of you tried to fit the MAF and filter directly to the pipes either side of the picture so that the filters are facing eachother and without the 90 degree elbows? I guess this way they'd either not quite fit, or they wouldn't get optimal air coverage as half the filter is pointing in towards the car...

dont think there will be room for normal sized filters but u may get away with mushroom type ...

mine will be set up as per pic above

Mark

i've finally got through to z1, and they have just informed me mine is delayed as selin are making revisions to the units... so anyone thinking of getting one may want to wait until these are done... i don't know any more about what revisions and neither did Z1.

This removal of the T- Piece is all new to me?

Can I ask what the gains are with this mod?

How much we looking at?

what output this is for? Presumably 500+

Im looking to scrape around the 400 mark as running stock internals.

Cheers

The T-piece in question being the large black T-shaped pipe that site above your air filter and divides the incoming air towards the turbos on either side. I think the gains would generally be in proportion to your current bhp - the lower the horsepower, the less benefit you'll get from it. I think the general feeling is that stock intake (i.e. a decent aftermarket filter off the single standard MAF) is good for 500bhp, but then starts to become a limitation as you push for higher power. Although I'm not quite pushing 500 (more like early 400s at a guess) I think I would gain a few ponies with this system, as well as the suggested quicker throttle response.

You are correct, MAFS limiting factors are based on volumetric internal size and the hot wire within. The Q45 allowed more air to be measured than the Z32 one.

The Selin kit though which has only been out a few years now, is a better upgrade than the Q45 MAF.
