Hi all, you may remember my post last year -

Well, work has finally commenced -

 

 

 

As you can see its not good, the other side is probably as bad at the back, the middle section is a bit better. My Zed is now on jacks and we have a MIG welder, so looks like we're giving it a shot.

 

My question is this - how many sections are there to the sills? I'm guessing we have the inner sill, the internal bit with the holes -

Then there's the outer sill which goes over the inner sill, this -

Lets theoretically say I'm replacing all of it, inner and outer, how easy are these to source and what's the average cost?

 

The inner sill doesn't need to look nice, so could be fabricated or some box steel used, but the outer sills will probably have to be purchased if I'm unable to salvage them.

 

I've never done this level of chassis / body work before, so if what I'm saying doesn't sound right please let me know! lol

Shit, that looked really bad...you could have just had my old shell for free, that would have saved you a shed load of work, time and expense

holy shit mate. good luck. you can seriously buy another complete z for the costs involved there mate. look for a non runner...ie timing belt gone. they are out there.

I agree 100%....though I also believe that there's a very fine line between bringing a zed back to life and creating a zombie

 

and I don't mean that in a bad way but there does have to be a point where it could be dangerous to continue due to structural integrity issues (ie. if it's involved in an RTA etc)

 

I hope this one isn't as far gone as the original pictures make it appear

agree mate. His is just rust damage though so as long as it's not collapsed anywhere and is properly sorted it should be fine.

You're a brave fella taking that on mate - but good luck with it and well done for giving it a go!!

 

Keep us informed of your progress too; as is is good to see another ZX surviving.....

Yep, it looks to be in much the same state as my own Zed was in, as you strip more parts off the car - you will find more corrosion unfortunately :sad:

Have a good look behind your fuel filler neck, you wouldn't believe how bad it can get there. Also it may be worthwhile removing your back bumper and

checking your lower quarter panels, honestly - I didn't have to look far for rust..............

 

But with a MIG welder, some pre-formed panels, some sheet steel and help from someone who has had similar experience - it is do-able:hammer:

I have posted some pictures that I took when I repaired mine.

 

I did mine the same a few months ago and i used some stuff called aquasteel to rust proof the inner sills before sealing it all up have a google on it :)

Mine seems to be very similar to how yours was. My main question I think is how many pre-fabricated sections did you need to buy, it looks like you fabricated the entire thing?

Can anyone tell me what this cable / pipe is for. It runs along side the drivers side, it seems to come from the engine bay (or at least it disappears up into the centre console) and back into the boot area I think. It isn't the rear washer pipe, or boot / petrol flap cable, I've already disconnected those.

When I first took the plunge, I too was mortified at the task that lay ahead. All I told myself was, if I don't do anything then that would be the end of my Z ownership.

so I thought "What Have I got to loose?" Up until that point I had not done anything remotely like this before. so I just went 1 step at a time.

As for the new panels, I only bought the outer sill sections front and rear (as pictured in your previous post) plus an inner support/strengthening panel for the front sills which can be tricky to fit.

Other than that I fabricated the rest, It may look difficult, but once you get going it's not to bad. (just be prepared to make several attempts before you get it right.

Maybe your Ariel cable I think?

Just to add, I did it the opposite way - bought the rear arch and lower quarter panel sections and then fabricated the sill panels (sheet steel bent over my auld knees) :wheelchair: :hammer:

could be a power cable for an aftermarket sound system from previous owner

stuff like this does seem very very daunting, esp when you do take the plunge take the cutting disc to it and find even more which is ussually the case. i remeber poking a 50p rust patch on my capri an hour later i had half the sill cut off, and was hacking into the inner sill. :(

knocked up the new sill at work on the press. then welded it all together and painted it all up. its the same as any body work prep is 90% and it will look far wporse before it gets better. mines not showing any signs of getting like this yet, but i know it will happen, and i will go down this route. I AM HOWEVER NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

I think it was your post that convinced me to give it a go, and like you, if I don't fix her this way; it probably the end of Z ownership (at least for the near future) as there isn't really any point in buying another in the location I currently live , plus money is tight, so it wouldn't be sensible really. So I'll work with what I've got I guess...

 

I think the cable is probably the Ariel, forgot about that, lol, really it's the only thing it could be and it's going from and to the right places.

 

Regarding the sills, can you remember how much you paid, and where you sourced them?

Just looked through my receipts for the replacement sills etc' (2008)

Bought from Mike (JP Eastern Autos) see traders section.

Front outer sill, £173.00 each. per side.

Front inner sill, £88.00 each. per side.

Front outer sill reinforcement panel, £34.00 each. per side

Order well in advance, I think mine took up to 6 months to arrive.

As for the rear section of the sill, (outer panel +reinforcement panel) I think I paid something like £45.00 the pair. per side

Bought them from a chap on E-Bay. can't remember his name, something like, littlebird. very good fit I might add.

Maybe some of the guy's on here will know more.

To add to this, the guy off ebay is littlebird1303, real name steve, he still does all the panels, dosent advertise that he does 300zx stuff, but he does. price is £45-£50 per panel.

Agreed mate, and his panels are spot on for fitment as well. I wouldn't hesitate to get my panels from him, much cheaper than oem but just as good :)

Cheers, I was just after a ball-park figure but this is great!

 

I'm hoping my outer front sill will be ok, at least on the near side, there is a little rust on it but I'm hoping this can be cut away and repaired.

 

Sussex Stu has provided me with the a number for littlebird1303, so really all I need now is some time, money and patients, maybe some luck too.

 

I'll keep you updated with my progress, but probably wont get back to working on my Z until the end of the month, I knew it would take time...
