obviously stuff like this can happen by accident, but checking those clamps really will help. also carrying a fire extinguisher could have stopped this before it go so bad, i remember hearing about a chap who had this happen on his cortina, and because he had no extinguisher he just had to sit there and watch it burn obviously the engine is gonna get damaged but it may be the differnce of tarting the engine back up and a total loss. its law on the continent but hands up how many of you dont own one or worse still own one but its not in the car!

ouch, poor zed :(, thanks for the heads up Stu, I`ve had a fuel leak in my vert for months, but keep forgetting about it until i start he engine to go out, I must get it done soon, but just on ebay now to get a fire extinguisher :)

Had a fuel leak on my Volvo a couple of years ago, apparently one of the injectors broke loose from the block spraying deasel around the engine. Was driving it at the time, burned through brake lines etc. Really quite scary. Car was a total right off.

My sisters Peugeot 206 spontaneously combusted the day her warranty ran out. She had just pulled up at the Trafford centre, got out, locked it and started to walk away. Heard a pop the the engine set on fire.the fire spread through the fire wall into the interior very quickly. All the cars nearby were covered in black blobs of melted stuff.

She want very impressed...

A friend of mine's Discovery went up - electrical rather than fuel, but he had extinguisher in it.... only problem was, the fire took hold so quickly, by the time he'd got his son out it was beyond saving.

Just remember, if you do need to use an extinguisher, crack the bonnet & spray through the gap - don't lift it.

I always used to carry a little extinguisher behind the drivers seat but it's coming to the end of it's life now, so needs replacing

I need to sort this one out and get it plumbed in

I'm surprised that new cars don't have these fitted as standard to be honest
