Hi guys.

My mechanic just fired up the zed at last.

He rebuilt top end from head up. Bottom end and oil pump was not touched as the lump I bought only done 30k

The oil was perfect when the engine was taken apart. No lips on the pistons either.

What happened was when they started it one bank was smoking for a few mins and running lumpy... But its still lumpy and they think its only running on 4 odd cylinders.

The oil pressure guage they used only showed a bar of pressure and not much else.

Absoluty everything is brand new apart from bottom end.

We are thinking this... Could anyone shed any light please... Otherwise engine back out and new bottom end oil pump etc.

Thanks.

Ant

oh ok thanks, will advise the mechanic...

He's telling me about 3k now to fix it!.... surely when the engine was out he should of renewed the bottom end even if his hunch told him it would be ok???

a few tests are needed before jumping to conclusions:

Oil pressure test with workshop gauge (in car one is crap & should be largely ignored LOL!)

Compression test & cylinder leakage test

Recheck cam timing

Check inside intake hoses for any oil residue

Consult check for codes & cylinder balance

oh ok thanks, will advise the mechanic...

If he doesn't know what the problem is how can he quote £3k to fix it??

3k? sounds a bit ominous bud as above that little list will really get things a littel clearer. tbh if a mechanic was telling me it was running on 4 odd id be wanting to know which two. bit vauge? he should be able to tell you which ones are working and which arnt. i wuld assume that the belt has gone on slightly wrong. leak down etc as suggested will reveal a hell of alot more.

A good mechanic would never have refurbed the top end and not touched the pistons, the engine wears as a whole and each component that is critical to sealing and creating good compression will naturally wear together ie valves and piston rings, because of this the engine works ok,as soon as you alter this ie refurb the heads you then put extra load on the piston rings, top end rebuilds are always a bad idea, likewise honing the bores with new rings but not touching the heads is equally as bad.3K to fix it is mad !! I do the whole engine for a little over that.

OK thanks guys, I'll print this out and stick it up his arse...

Besides... I wouldn't go to Currys and buy a half working TV!! I'd laugh at the guy serving me and walk out... thing is... this guy has me car ;-(

I'll let you know how it goes.

Much appreciated peeps xx

I would ask the "mechanic" to clean out the Oil Sending Unit and make real sure he has not crossed up the injector wiring by doing a balance test. If you had the oil pressure before , no reason for it to die on you. It is real easy to cross the 3 and 4 injector feeds from the wiring harness.

nothing like a good laugh first thing in the morning...

hope you get it sorted mate and its something simple :)

If it's still blowing smoke and the injectors have been out there may be a torn o ring flooding it with fuel, what colour is the smoke? by all rights they cant charge you again, you bought it in to be fixed its not your problem if they cock up the job.

I do the whole engine for a little over that.

And by far the best rebuild u will ever get, from a top300 mechanic.......... (I got a "Jimmer enterprise rebuild"!!)

Alz.

Who are the other 299? :whistling:

Tell the mechanic to check all the vac pipes, injector plugs and PTU connections. Mine ran similarly when i fitted my new engine, easy to check before you go down the road of another engine pull. What is he using to check the oil pressure?

I bet he has missed a vac pipe under the drivers throttle body too

lol you lot make me smile at least.... It's worth keeping the Zed just to be part of this :turned:

All good advice too, cheers.

It's looking like is going to be towed away to Terry (the 300 mechanic on here), he's going to help me and has offered to do it for next to nothing which is amazing...

If things still don't look good then I will be calling on Jimmer.

I was told tonight be this 'mechanic' it's knocking around 2000rpm but Terry explained it can sound like it if timing is wrong anyway.

Doesn't knock at idle at all.

Will keep you posted, all this info is being printed off ;)

UPDATE...

Terry came to help the other mechanic, took all the timing off, re-did it and it's still ill... They found loads of air leaks around the top end and when the car gets up to around 2000rpm still it has a loud cam sound.

Oil pressure still low.... they both come to the conclusion that I need another new engine, so the guy who sold me this one was telling fibs.

Great, anybody got a decent running engine? **(POSTED IN: ITEMS WANTED)**

Hi mate not a 300 mechanic lol, I am a mechanic though, cam timing was ok, throttle body gasket was leaking bad and has a major air leak under plenum looking like plenum gasket

So don't hold much hope on the new head gaskets lol.

I'd say it all needs stripping down to check his work or by a known working lump and shoe horn it in.

But one things for sure wouldn't give him any more money.

:asshole: yup.... he can kiss this for sure! lol

Lol atleast ya still smiling
