i just bought an '88 z31 turbo today. on the way home it was fine from glasgow to dundee on the m'way then going through dundee the temp guage went up to the three quarter warning mark and it started blowing cold air through the vents. then back o the dualler it went back to normal but the oil temp. guage went up a notch.

then i got to the country road that takes me home and the water temp. went back up and the cold air started again. and it was doing this on and off when i took it for a run around town.

its got a pretty bad misfire that should be fixed with ht leads but has anyone got any idea what the crack is with the temperature lol?

and please dont say something expensive lol

This will be the white one in lanarkshire then? Saw the ad on another zed site last week.

Post a thread up on zclub.net as well as there are a few folk on there with good knowledge of the z31 (I have an NA and the guys on there have helped out a few times), vast majority of folk on here are z32 owners.

as said mostly z32 owners here not many z31 so zclub is a btter bet or the us 300zxclub.com i would suspect from that you have an air lock or poor circulation withon the block.

Sounds like air lock coupled with low coolant level

Sounds like what i had with my z32, might be an idea to change the old coolant pipe work as well as mine was letting air into the system but the cracks were not big enough to let water out.

Quickest z31 sale ever, think it was up for less than a week...they seem to be coming back into fashion lately, I've seen a few come up for sale but that one did look to be the tidiest I've seen in a long time. I'm in Scotland too, got z31 NA but its rarely seen any action since I got a z32 tt in the summer.

It may take a day or two before anyone gets back to you on zclub as its not as busy as on here but there are a few folk that should offer you some tips, including Mike Feeney from MJP who is on here as well as zclub.net - he's your man for spare parts for the z31 by the way if you don't know him already - http://www.mjpauto.com/300z31.html best to give him a phone as he has stock/has access to a lot more than the website lists.

Your best bet is to put up a 'check out my new z31' thread with some pic to get attention and then ask for some help with the overheating

yeah the second i clapped eyes on it i wanted it lol. been wanting one for a while but that one is really clean with low mileage. no rust or rot that iv found. engine would be good if it asnt for this cooling problem and the misfire. and its stacks of reciept. no expense has ever been spared on that car from what i can tell.

iv got an s14a 200sx stage1 aswell but im going to sell that and get something normal for work.

yeah the guy that sold me the z31 mentioned him. il be chasing him around shortly for bits lol. i think it might be him whos getting the ht leads

could be as little as a coolant problem or as bad as needing a gasket kit. you'll just have to have a look and let us know your progress as i'm interested in the faults and finding them on the 31. cos i'll be getting one also.

hi mellow yellow. it was low coolant and its leaking water. im yet to find out where from though.

that will be it then if the 12v vg is anything like the 24v vg in ours then you will need to jack the front end up to bleed the air out the system otherwise you will get hotspots then boom. i would run the engine up and visually check over with the additive recommended then look at the dry floor for spotting. then trace it up. get some pics of the beast up i like to see z31s id hav eobne if i could have two toys

More than likely just a brittle hose that's split from the cold weather. I had a scare with mine last year, there was steam near the windscreen so I opened the bonnet and it looked like it was leaking at the gasket but when it cooled down and had a chance to get it inspected it was just a brittle coolant pipe at the back of the engine bay that had a small split and was spraying the coolant off the back of the block thankfully.

Here's a wee video tour of mine

nice cars mate especially the Z31, Is it a Turbo? I always thought the Turbos had a bonnet scoop on the top? Ive got a z31, but only a N/A ,their getting quite rare now!! :)

The pre-facelift ones like yours would have a scoop if it was a turbo but the sitched it on the facelift ones from 87-

Lovely white Z31 mate!!

I liked those ever since seeing Bruce Willis drive one in the movie "Blind Date" way back in the 1980s......

I'm sure that someone over on the Zclub will be able to advise you better on the problem too; good luck buddy!!
