Have heard mixed views on this come people say i will gain 20hp some say i will lose power.

I have a set of factory twin turbo manual cams, thinking of putting them into my n/a auto.

Anything really to be gained?

Also if i was going for an ECU chip in the near future would i want an auto or manual chip with these cams fitted?

The Auto had "slighty" different cams and a lower AR in the turbo in order to closely match the TT's 0-60 time, so in theory yes is your answer.

It is of course mainly the lower AR that increased it's acceleration.

That said, the gain is very very minimal if even noticeable, hardly an easy plonk in job, so imo for the small cost of them second hand, the effort involved swapping them over, it far outweighs the gain and yes even if you an engine out and part stripped.

With all the many many newly built engines peeps have done, I have never known anyone in over 10 years to bother their time with it, they generaly go with the JWT cams of various levels if required.

Thanks for the wicked response.

I've got the cams already sitting here but wasnt sure how they would perform going into an n/a engine, rocker covers are already off for paint so wouldn't take me long to swap em over, from what you're saying would you say a 20hp gain is pissing in the wind? i figure i would get a better gain from them over the stock cams once i get some aftermarket headers on to go with my existing full exhaust and pod filter. But if even with that i'm only going to get a few hp gain i don't see much point.

Are there any other side effects to be had ie fuel consumption?

Anything that makes the car quicker can have an effect on the fuel consumption lol

As for gain, if you managed a quarter of what you hoped i'd be surprised tbh.

The only place i can think that may have done it is someone on TT.NET.

You could ask there, but I doubt the responce would really differ from here.

You've nothing to lose except your time, so base your decision on that perhaps.

i have to say i agree with smithy, i remember building my old engine which i fitted high lift cams to, it did increase peak power but shifted the whole power balance more suited to track than road. and it idled like crap. theres alot to consider when changing cams mostly what you really want to gain from the process, as changing cams isnt really a first stop shop to gaining more power more a compliment to something else. im not sure about the vg but the last engin ei pulled the cams on the head had to come off and new bearing pressed in each time and machined. imo for the gains your talking its a waste of time you would gain far better from other mods. that would be easier and cheaper.

I say if its all apart already and wont take long to do, change them anyway. You'll never make an NA into a huge-BHP fire breathing monster but every little helps.
