My assumption would be either piston or piston ring failure. If you have the funds and the body is sound, it is worth the fix, imo.

Thats what I'm thinking bodywork is good ,funds are here but lost faith in it

might look for a well sorted one and use this one for spares to sell on. It has got some nice bits added got to do some thinking

If you do rebuild her, give "jimmer" a shout, top bloke and the best rebuild by far!!!

First things first do a compression test, sniffer etc. however it def dont sound great, but it doesnt automatically spell the end. If the money etc is there see it as an opertunity, simply buying another will leave you with new unknowns. You could potentially spend engine rebuild money to be no further forward.

anyone know roughly how much a recon engine is and where's the best place to purchase

I would, personally, not go down the recon engine route. There are many people on here who have done this, only to have the same/similar symptoms to the recon engine very soon after fitting. Why spend up to £1000 for a fitted recon, when just a few pennys more, you can have a rebuilt engine....

Have faith Andy, we can rebuild the engine. What we can't do is lose another Zed.

Will strip the engine down and see what has gone wrong then fix and rebuild.

would be much better to get a rebuilt engine from a rep trader and faster to install

Check the water and see if there is oil in it.... That'll tell you whether it's the head gasket or not... otherwise I'd say rings or seals as above
