got a weird prob with my powersteering, every now and then the steering goes heavy, it comes cack after a little while or if i just restart the engine all is fine. this only seems to have happened after I filled the PS pot 2 weeks ago, is it possible to overfill the system??

thanks Craig

It can also be problems with the wiring but given it didn't start until you topped it up it's not really relevant i thought.

Its teh right fluid, i did fill the PS pot right up, So I wondered if that might have been the prob as ive never had any issues with the PS before. Ill check the wiring on the pump though just to be on the safe side.

Hmmm my old ZX used to do it but i never managed to track down the problem before totalling it. only seemed to do it on long corners or roundabouts.

What i mentioned before is the common problems i've heard of on other forums.

Might just bleed the system and refil I think see what happens, thanks though

I think you can overfill it Craig and you should do it when the engine is running. There's marks on the dipstick (Also should take that reading when the engine is warm) to show wether it's too high or low. If you filled it right up, it's probably overfilled :(

cheers fella thats what I suspected ill drain a little out, was rushing when i checked fluids so just filled her up :( will know for next time lol

Mine does this - not very often and with seemingly no common factors when it does occur. I remember reading about the speed signal sensor and also that chipped ECU's can affect this. Every time I pass 100mph, the speedo trips out for a sec, then springs back to the correct speed. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing they may be related.

Anyway, steering isn't that heavy without the pump ya wuss :tt2:

ROFL that depends if he's going round a roundabout when it goes heavy ;) Had that happen to me in a Capri, scary moment I can tell you. Also read something once about a bus driver who's spine got snapped by his busses power steering failing while he was going round a roundabout

I also have this occassionaly i beleive its something to do with the speed sensor my clocks go weird every so often, and the steering then goes heavy!, arnt they related due to the fast you go the heavier the steering, and hicas?

I deleted my hicas however the ecu is still in place, il have a good look over the woring and whip the clocks out and check all connections aswell

Thanks Craig

ha have you drivenb the zed with no powered steering i have its the heaviest steering in the world lol

i would also go with a sensor fault, i think tbh if you overfill it just overspills. i dont think the two are connected. just coincidence.

HICAS is the devil, i sold that crap for scrap.

Yeah Z without power steering isn't my idea of fun, at speed its not so much of an issue as you can feel it happen and just muscle it a bit.

Wouldn't want to try parking one without power steering though.

Good excuse to switch out the guages for some nice 300kph ones. I had the same thing happen intermittently and it was followed very shortly afterwards (~100 miles) by a non-working speedo guage. Took it out and resoldered all the points, but it didn't fix the speedo - but I didn't think of checking the mph/kph converter!

Sorry, should have said - you can feel the power steering cutting in and out when it happens. Although its not very often I'm turning the wheel at that speed, but on occasions.. :whistling:

Is the steering not just heavy because you are trying to fight against the pump? I.e if you removed the power steering sytem it would actually be easier to turn than with a non-working PAS setup?
