Following on from my "Whats it worth thread", I wondered what kinda money

people have thrown at a 20yr old car, I know as with any enthusiasts car there instant money pits, And ive come to the conclusion im never buying a project again!!! Without including the cost of the car or general service items ive had a tally up today and im at £14,885 since October 09. I know ive prob missed stuff aswell. Christ you can pick up a complete modded car now for half that. So why do we bother???????

I know its all down to personal circumstances on what people can afford but are we nuts or what???

Just wondering what other peoples thoughts were?

I reckon ive spent that on the engine alone recently. I'd have to tally up, but i kinda dont want to.

Why do we do it? In hindsight, i wouldnt have. I'd have something newer, better, faster, more desireable, more reliable and no modifications. But you get too involved and spent too much money so that you reach the point of no return.

It is stupid! My car is currently enginless, in need of a paint job and hasnt done 1000miles in the last 2 years. My engine still isnt finished. But hey, i cant stop now. :hammer:

The car itself was a shade under £6k and I've spend £860 or so at zedworld on it so far, and I've owned it about 10 weeks. Bone stock UK manual TT with 61,000 on it. It's had a respray, has FSH and had new cow on the inside before I bought it.

Im glad im not the only one who would not do it again in hindsight.

When you consider the zed you can buy for £6-£8k, it makes no sense to pour loads of ££ into doing it yourself.

Yes there would be none of the 'look what i made' satisfaction but is that really worth it?

With all the ball ache and hassle Ive had of getting my car to where she is now, No chance id be happy to just buy drive and enjoy.

probably around £20k+ at a guess on repairs, bodywork & mods, not too bad considering I have owned it for nearly 10 years now. :)

If I had to put a figure on it, I'd guess at about 8k not including the purchase.

Personally, I'd rather spend 20k modifying a car than 20k on a car. Unless it was 20k on a modified car.. Thing is, I'd never save up 20k to blow in one go, so it's irrelevant. I wouldn't start worrying about what my car owes me though, its only small scale compared to what I've invested in my missus - have you seen how much handbags cost these days?

Bought my UK TT for £1500. Done all mods myself, nothing major has need replacing, only the clutch and that was £220. i have changed the look of it from when i got it. it had a large wings west spoiler, some crappy veilside skirts and a god awful bumper.

Now has a fibreglass 89 spoiler. new sills which i was donated, and a jap front bumper.

I would say all in including the buying of her £2200.

Not bad for a late 94 spec UK TT Manual. That works and puts a smile on your face..

I dont care what ive spent on mine, i dont care what its worth as i bought it as my own fun project just for me lol, i will never sell it regardless of my circumstances, its a labour of love and if you love the zed, then it shouldnt matter.

If someone wants something reliable or doesnt cost too much money to run, then buy a fiesta

Just my opinion of course

I agree with groover, I know that's hard to justify to my wife.....

BUT, a lot of people I know like to put their own stamp on a car and feel a lot more proud of it because its their hard work, ideas and money that has made it what it is rather than just picking up one that is mint, modded and to the spec you want a.....

If I add up my receipts, add on what I've spent online and then add on [cough] cash purchases, it's probably £28k+ over 8.5 years, excluding the £6k I paid for the car. jeepers :(

My TT owes me about 14k over 9 years, and my vert is coming up to about 10k after about 2years!!!! fook knows what I`ve spent it all on, oh and my z31 stands me at about 2k in 7 years, bloody hell!!! anyone wanna buy them all so I can get my r35?

:)

including buying the tt and blowing up the engine it the total bill stands between 5-6 grand. i dont intend to create a show stopper or a track king, just a toy that can be thrown round atrack day or two.

Have you not read my "I hate gordons ford" thread!!

Can't believe you've started this thread Craig. Just about to go through all my reciepts/invoices in preparation for writing my for sale ad. I already know i'm going to have to take a massive hit but seeing it in black and white is not going to be nice.

Someone is going to benefit nicely but my mind is made up.

OR IS IT :lol::lol:

Yep. Got talked into keeping it last time. Spent another grand on it stupidly. Time to let someone else enjoy it. I'm going to upgrade my work van.

Far too much to post on the forum - the wife might be looking :scared:

Why do you think i have not posted lol

Cheerz

I'm down about 20k so far since I got it two years ago. I've still got a 2k respray to come as well :(

umm i gave £1400 for the car and spant about £600 on it such as cambelt and other repairs and about £2000 in fuel

I have reciepts for just over £68k spent on the LWB since '07 (a lot of that is import tax) and about £2k spent on top of purchase price on the SWB. To be fair though, over the last few years I've sold, re-bought and then re-sold parts so often that I've lost track of the actual total re-couped from the total spent

Definately in the red though :punk:
