I went to fit a momo wheel to my 95 NA instead of the stock airbag wheel and i've come across a problem.........

wheel removed........

wheel with what i believe to be a hicas boss for a TT......

hicas bit removed........

wheel centre fitted and bolted on, all seems to fit nicely.........

then wheel fitted......

however , when i do the centre nut up nice and tight the steering is very heavy (almost like the car is not running) and there is no response through the wheel and it is just as heavy to turn back to centre after a corner.

so i loosened the centre nut a bit and the steering feels better,

however as you can seethe only thing that turns the yellow disk (which cancels the indicator) is the friction of the centre bolted to it, so with usable steering the yellow disc slips compared to the wheel

obviously if the disk slips comparred to the wheel it will rip out the horn wire.

am i doing it wrong or am i missing a plastic bit to catch on the 2 pegs sticking out of the yellow disk?

Not sure about the HICAS issue, doesn't really look like what I would expect a HICAS boss to look like, but I have never removed my steering wheel so never seen one, but I would remove the airbag, I wouldn't want that to go off with that wheel on!

yes the air bag is in the wheel, thats all been carefully removed :)

first thing is that centre metal part of the boss is for the TT !!

I made the same mistake on my NA and actually damaged the centre part !

The middle boss needs to tighten round the steering shaft but not touch the plastic spinning bit !

So you will need to either remove the centre part that rotates and make a diy bit for the

horn if you dont have hicas or find a boss for the NA model which has a thinner metal part that

doesn't touch the plastic.

the yellow spinning bit as far as i know is for hicas sensor and signal cancelation !

it definatly does the signal cancelation (and i dont have hicas)

the plastic plate with the yellow sticker pops off fairly easily and behind it is a fairly large coil of ribon cable feeding the horn and airbag connector. i'm not too fussed about that as i can wire a horn switch in fairly easily

i really want the signal cancelation to work so wasnt sure how much more i could remove

the momo website suggests that there is only 1 type of boss to fit all models of 300zx

any one got any photos of this wheel sucsesfully fitted to a NA or TT ?

god you want it all lol you will have to fit an older style from a non airbag version

with cream on :)

an older what? yellow disc?

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

no pre airbags dont have those yellow discs infact the canceller should be on there behind the yellow disc !

My solution was to remove the plastic bit with the ribbon cable in and the yellow sticker on. It then looked like a standard series 1 without cruise, except without the horn contact. Everything then fitted fine , all bolted together, worked and indicators cancelled correectly. and i wired a seperate horn button on the dash

Probably not the correct way, but it worked for me

Thanks Ian, is they any way of picking up the power supply and wiring the horn into the standard non air bag wheel.

cheers Paul
