quick update:

got round to doing the high beam mod today - a must for anyone with HID's

link here to our FAQ section: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=117007

As standard on a zed the dipped beam headlights will go out when you switch main beam on or flash the headlights - not good for the HIDs or for light output as it takes a short while for the HIDs to come back on.

With this mod carried out it keeps you dipped beam (HIDs) on when you switch your main beam on. Also when the headlamps are off it will just flash your main beam & not affect the HIDs to switch them on as some other mods will do.

Heres a pic with the mod carried out - both lamps on:

Looks awesome Paul! Must do the mainbeam mod on my uk z!!

Thanks! Mines a UK too :)

hmm - wonder why some do & some dont - the document for the mod is from Japan so clearly not a JDM/UK thing??

Mines a S2 - what have you guys got that dont switch off dipped beam?

Not sure bud, I've got the HIDs fitted to the shortie' which is a '95 TT.

I know the lights are different to those on my LWB (UK spec) '91 TT.

Someone will have an answer I'm sure...

I am sure they all left the factory the same way, that is when you flash the dipped/hid's will go off and if your car doesn't it as been modded.

I have found this what Graham wrote a while back

On the hid to the lamp, you have 2 spade connectors, on the black wire(ground) add another wire in the same spade and connect it to a bolt or screw on the bodywork, but make sure its a good earth point. You only need to do one side and it will enable the hids to be on when you have main beam on.

You can add another ground link if you wish to the other side for good measure, but will work with one. HTH

NB: when you flash, it will also ignite the HID's so to prolong lamp life, dont go over board with the flashing lol.

There is another mod in the faq section to do a ground at the relay, which will stop the HID's flashing when you use the main beam, but the above is the easiest and quickest, 5min job

Now he mentions the relay mod and I believe I have done this but it doesn't make the hid/dipped stay dormant when you flash the fulls from dipped off, they come on which confuses me and contradicts, in post 7 I can open that link of course but for some reason I cannot open the doc files and I would like a read, so if someone could do this for me I will be most grateful, either pm or post on this thread.

Finally another mod, on the Aus site they was talk of a diode being used in the actual light pod itself, obviously some sort of bridge between connections, I have made an attempt at this some time ago but was unsuccessful unfortunately :mad2:

Hi bud - the docs open just fine for me - just tried again. They are MS Word docs - do you have this installed?? Try downloading open office if not :)

Not saying the links don't work Paul, just that not for me

Downloading openoffice as I type so shortly I will be fine for now and any in the future.

Many thanks :thumbup1:

I know - I just wondered if they didnt work for you because you didnt have office to open them :D

the full mod to stop the hid flashing when you flash main beam involves running wires from the flashing stalk to the relay in the fuse box

the simpler relay/ fuse box mod of shorting a pin to ground is the same as what Ghraham discribes of ataching the light to the chasis

If you kindly check out this link again from post 7

You will notice I have added a bit of a 'How To' following on from Graham's lead post, about the HID light modification.

It might persuade some of you to give it a go.

Please no posts in the Storage Area section unless it adds to what is there, thank you........ewe I sound like a moderator :tt2:

Well done mate, this was on my maybe list and now migrates to the definite to do list. Was thinking about just getting cheaps ones off ebay, doing the quick mod to keep them on when flashing, then just replace when they go pop...but your pic and simplification of instructions has made this less intimidating.

Cheers

Very kind comments thank you, it's why I did it,

Andy.

Here it is migrated over

Having read many threads about the main beam staying on when you flash, with regard to the pin 5 needing to be earthed from the headlight relay (in the large box passenger side, relay is the one nearest the front of the car).

I have read the helpful post/thread here and it's the fat green wire that requires grounding on the body

http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=266217&highlight=high+beam&page=2

If you just snip away the black tape from the large bunch of wires at the corner of the box, you will be able to just tease this green wire up to enable you to splice into it and ground a wire from it of equal thickness of course.

Done mine and it works a treat.

Now please note what this does to the car:-

With no lights on in the daytime, it will flash the dipped or hid's if you have them, together with the full/main beam, ie all lights lit in the headlamp unit.

With dipped/hid's on at night, it will flash the full/main beam and the dipped/hid's will not change, ie stay lit, be unaffected.

***********EDIT NOW 18 MONTHS ON FROM WHEN I WROTE THE ABOVE***********

I always had an issue with the hid lights being flashed during the daytime after carrying out the above and coming on with the main beam, and the mod to do with the attached files in post 1 is the only way to go and I have now done it on my Z and it now works perfectly, just how I want it to

The attached file modification states to use a Nissan relay with numbered pins 1,2,3 and 5, I have done it with a normal more common relay and the following tells you which pins go with which wire and where they go to.

Basically what I am now going to describe is pretty much what the attached files are stating but a touch simpler I hope with fresh pictures to show, especially the work needed in the light pod.

#1, From your new relay position marked 30 connect the wire that you have after splicing into the fat green wire that comes from pin 5 in the passenger side fuse box. This is the quick modification described above and what I carried out initially. Yellow coloured spade in the pic below.

#2, You now need a wire from the positive side of your battery to pin numbered 85 on your new relay, put an inline fuse in this feed with a 1 or 2 amp fuse. Red coloured spade in the pic below.

#3, Now your new relay needs a grounding/earthing wire to position 87. See the point I have used in the picture. Black coloured spade in the pic below.

#4, You now need a longer wire that needs to go from position 86 of the new relay to the light pod. Blue coloured spade in the pic below.

DSC01587.jpg

Now at the light pod, you do gain more access to the wires if you remove the pod back, sever the 2nd pink one in wire about 3 inch from the connector itself, on the pink wire connect your new wire from your new relay position 86 and also the leg of the diode needs to go on here, you must get the diode the correct way round so please note the pic where the band on the diode is nearest the connector. Now on the other diode leg connect it back up with the other side of the pink wire.

DSC01588.jpg

Ebay is a good source for the inline fuse and a relay, just search with '1N4002' for the correct rectifier diode.

Mine is all rough to show so of course tidy your wires and relay neatly and use crimps or solder them together in the light pod.

To summarise what now happens and this must be everybody's goal who has HID lights fitted in their dipped beam.

When hid/dipped lights are off in the daytime and you flash just the main beam will come on and the hid/dipped lights will NOT.

When the hid/dipped lights are on at nightime and you go to main beam or flash, main beam will come on and the hid/dipped lights will stay on, be unaffected with no interuption to their supply.

Lets now call this the 'diode mod' from this moment on and I hope I have added and made easier the information already on this thread

THats confused the hell out of me :confused1:

All i needed was about a 4" bit of wire on the drivers headlight. Off the top of my head, you tap into the nutral and earth it to the body and job done. only takes like 2 min.

This is the common misconception with this modification.

Your mod and the earthing of the fat green wire of pin 5 of the relay work exactly the same.

When our cars left the factory and before HID lights existed, with dipped on and you flash or go to main beam the dipped lights go out for as long as you are pulling back the stalk, then they revert back again, all your mod does is stop this from happening.

This diode mod will do that also, but it's selling point is that it stops the hid lights from coming on when you flash in the daytime, ie when your hid lights are in the off position
