I bought a sump plug a while ago from Z1 and fitted it yesterday whilst doing and engine flush. When I dropped the second lot of oil I saw some debris on the magnet. I thought - that's cool it's obviously doing it's job. But NO!

The magnet on the end of the sump plug had fowled a baffle plate inside (I assume) and half of it had disintegrated and the debris was the broken bits of the magnet its self.

I'm not sure if i have all of the magnet pieces but I hope so. If not, then that means there are bits of magnet debris somewhere in my block!

When I compared the length of the two sump plugs, the magnet was about 4mm longer than standard - just enough to cause the problem.

If you do have a magnetic sump plug you are looking to fit then please measure it compared to the original. If it's longer, don't fit it.

blimey... good advice there andy, I'd never have thought it would have been a problem part!

Cheers for the heads up Andy, I was looking at buying one of these to do an oil change over the winter. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has had the same problem.

Fingers crossed no serious damage has been done.

any further info on this, how long is a standard sump plug? ive got one to fit but this has put me off slightly

just a thought here but cant the standard sump plug be magnetised?

Sorry bud, I've put the original back in now!! I would just compare the two when you do an oil change.

Or, put the magnetic one in and take it straight out again and see if it has any damage?

to get into your block it needs to come un-stuck from the sump then get past the pick-up gauze then go through your filter...i think you can sleep knowing it aint in your block:cool3:

Phew!!! That's saved me looking up a diagram of the sump assembly.

Cheers!

would never have thought of this Andy ...luckily my zed is at Jeffs and im sure he will check this out with mine as i had a magnetic plug in the pile of parts to be ffitted

well ive just fitted mine its def about 10mm longer than the oem one. it certainly didnt seem to feel like it was fouling. and i cant really see how it would hit the crank or con rods, in that position. :/

More likely to be touching a baffle plate.

A very interesting thread Andy, just looking at these and they vary greatly on ebay, I expect you have got one of the longest and this is the obvious reason you are having issues.

Based on your thread I am going to get this one but does it extend far enough inside to work as it should? Sure the wrench demo looks very impressive smiley-face-thumb.gif

This next one appears to be a touch longer and if I was to guess could well be the correct length for this product

Where as this one seems to be even longer headachesmiley.gif why the flips do they vary so much?
