Well today thought id get under the car and have a look at getting the exhaust off, was nicely surprised to find that its got a full japspeed system on including divorced waist gate downpipes. so no elbows.

Well was looking over the car as i had done before, checking out the welding that i know about, when i came across this.

attachment.php?attachmentid=60666&stc=1&d=1310570233

at first glance it looks ok, but then i realised that it has smear marks in it where someone has fillered, give it a slight press and could hear the filler cracking slightly.

Give you an idea of where this is on the car, thats the front wheel on the right of the image, and you can see the vents of my wing.

Not sure i want to even bother trying to get that fixed to be honest as its going to be a lot of work and i cant weld to save my life. not sure how the hell the car past the last MOT now.

Totally disheartened now and not sure what to do, the gear box is shagged, the engine is shagged, and now the body work is shagged.

so really the car is shagged, looks good on top but falling apart.

complete waist of cash getting the new engine and gear box to be honest.

im now actually dreading what im going to find under the side skirts.

:crying: think i might just give up with 300zx's, i now know why on the last advisory it said "body work excessively corroded **dangerous**" would of thought that who ever got the MOT, would of at least got the problem sorted out properly.

It always looks worse than u think. Even after its all been cut out. But remember it doesnt really make any difference whether its a small area or a large one, once a new piece of metal is welded in it starts looking much better. look through my repair thread and then look at it after the repair. Anything is repairable and when done bit at a time its really not that hard to do.

Hope you get it fixed as its a really nice looking zed.

think im going to do this the way i said about to start with, get the engine and gear box in, and then concentrate on the welding once the car is running. might stick it through the MOT with that filler in place and get it done after September when i can afford it.

Good man Ian, glad to read this. Hope you can get it sorted - there'll be loads of people on here who'll be able to help I bet

Well it past a MOT before, with that mess of a fix. As my mrs said jane, "think of it like this, once its done is it going to need doing again any time soon?" to which my reply was, "not the same part of the car, well not for a good few years", Just means ill have to move, getting the ablfug and respray closer to the beginning of next year rather than around april / may time

In other news, the turbos on the new engine are coming off quite easily, didn't even need to give them much effort to get the nuts turning. only 1 nut holding the drivers side turbo onto the car, and 2 holding the passenger side on at the moment, need to modify a 13mm ring spanner though to get on one of the bolts as the head is too big to fit between the manifold down section on the turbo housing and the bolt.

i think being totally honest you should learn to weld, its something you will always use its no whete near as bad as it seems i would teach you if i where closer. look at this way once upon a time you couldnt do mechanics. now your happily popping the engine in and out of a zed. we all have to start sum where. take your time get your weld on and take some brave pills. the engine and box are half done arnt they. the shell will take time, mig welding is quite easy to pick up most of it will be tacking up not running lines. honestly mate you will be laughing at it once you learn

i know what you mean, and if i had the spare cash to get my self a mig welder i would, and practise on metal I've got strewn around my garage, but i cant at the moment.

Im a planner, i like to know where my cash is going from one month to the next, which is why a lot of the time you might hear me say "ill be ok after...." because ive basically budgeted up to the end of September. not really much i can do unless i sell some car parts.

Its one of the things ive always wanted to learn, just always ended up putting it on the back burner.

chin up mate...

have a cup of tea or something and it will not seem so bad. I hav efaith that you will get it sorted and she'll be back on the road in the near future.

you dont hav eto go buying a brand new mig welder, renting one does work out expensive however. see if some sum 1 local will let you have a go with theres you will so see how much easier it is that you think.

D

Incredibly sensible tho Ian, esp with kids to look after. My mate Dean is totally skinting himself modding his MR2 tubby to the point of not eating for days coz all his money gets spent on the car. Doesn't help your frustration levels tho :crying:

Hi Vodkashots,

I found myself in a similar situation in July 2009, my Zed was not going to pass the MOT because of excess corrosion. How it passed the previous MOT (before I bought it) - I've no idea :confused1:

I borrowed a MIG welder from Ossian, who also gave me welding lessons - and over the course of about a year +, I replaced inner and outer sills, wheel arches, parts of the floor and a lot of the inner quarters. I'd never used a MIG welder before that, fair enough - my welding was dodgy to begin with but eventually improved through practice.

It is do-able, if I can do it - most people on here can! It was a case of teaching an old dog new tricks :scared:

I hope that you get sorted out, one way or another.

Cheers - Andy

Bad news mate!

I was reading thinking, i'll have it back.

Im sure you'll love it once youve got over this pain in the arse!

If you get it running, bring it to brum, i'll get my mate to sort the welding as cheap as possible!

Oh hon, mate, Ian, I am so sorry. Can only imagine who you are feeling right now. Least mine's only a crappy Saab, i'm not emotionally attached to it.

Could you break it for the good parts on it, get some money back that way?

Hugs

x

OK Janus, spill the beans, just who do you reckon Vod's is feeling right now....:wink:

Sorry to hear of your situation Ian.:w00t:

Right, having sat and thought about it for a while, plus talked with the Mrs, the plan is, stay on track and get the engine and gear box done, then get the welding jobs patched for now, just enough to last till next year, and then when the car goes to the body shop to get the abflug put on, get some smooth side skirts and get the welding work sorted out properly, at least that way its done then and wouldn't need doing for a good 20 years.

Colour will be staying blue, but will be going bayside blue as originally intended on my red one.

So im going to keep the car.

Was gutting for a while there though as from the looks of it, it really did seem worse than what people are saying. but hell if it keeps this one on the road, sills and body work welding can and will be done.

Just need to get september out of the way first and start getting my parts together for the build next year.

Will also get under the car again tomorrow and have a proper ganders and make sure ive found all welding that needs doing.

well done... I thinking of selling cos aof a few tapping noises from the engine and a cfew bad shifts from the auto box... time for a rethink here too.

i think if i hadn't already got the new engine to go in, or the gearbox to replace the knackered one, im sure id actually be thinking about selling it.

But as i have the drive train to make it at least move on its own steam, think the best thing to do would be get it working mechanically, and then sort the body work so it lasts longer.

Ian mate ..i did welding as an apprentice and i picked it up in a week ...its not as bad as it seems , there is a definate skill to it but if your mechaniclay minded and can learn things relatively easily then its worth trying it out ...also comes in handy as a nice little earner for others that need welding doing.....

I'm going to be scrapping the shell from the TT breaker and it's in cracking condition with virtually no rot at all (gutting really it has to be junked) so if you need any patch panels cutting out let me know and i'll angle grind them out after i've removed the engine.

Would be far easier to weld in the correctly shaped panels than try and patch in with plate steel?

Doesn't matter, always wanted to learn to weld, and now im getting the chance too. :D

Going to practice though before i even get the thing near my car. will start with tack welds first and then do weld lines in stages to reduce panel warp.
