hi everyone, just took the zed out for a spin, engine running mint but the autobox wont go past 2nd gear, changes from 1st to 2nd no problem but wont go past 2nd. anyone got any ideas?

If it's broke, I have a good quality auto box for sale in the for sale section, £200 including torque converter. Known good condition, only removed to replace with a manual.

cheers hollowpoint, hoping i wont need one but if i do you will be first on the list to contact as your not far away from me. would rather try find the fault with this one first

well, i have the same problem currently in mine, only way forward is to either get it reconditioned AND hope who ever does it does it properly, or replace with a known working one.

I too have a spare known working good one with torque converter from a UK TT same price as hollow points, came off the car as i broke the car due to rusting issues with the body work.

Have you tried swapping the tranny fluid and giving the filter a proper good clean? then repeat?

To be honest, once the box starts going it is pretty much just a matter of time till it dies completely, but by doing what i have suggested you might just get a few more miles out of it.

Mine was not happy, but by cleaning it all out and swapping fluid i managed to get a few more hundred miles. Worth a try if you have the time.

Yeah now you mention it, I had a slightly different problem with my automatic Toyota Estima. When first started, it just didn't move, like things weren't engaging properly. I changed the oil in the tranny and it improve for a while, still was on it's way out definitely, but it did help it for a while longer. The oil that came out was definitely dead and I think it was actually that which caused the box to start failing in the first place. Many people don't realise you should change tranny and diff oil, so it's usually one of the first things I do with a car, have been a bit slack on that lately tbh :(

agreed, however lets just check some silly obvious things. the over drive button is definatly engaged isnt it? your not mistaking 2 for third and your over drive is off? is there enough fluid in the box? i drove mine to work once got on a dual carraige way and it went very quickly upto 70 with the revs up and then continued with the revs up, i paniced a little before realising i had it locked into 2nd on the box.

there is a diagnostics procedure for the box, worth trying. id say its probally on its way out, honestly do what everyones doing and convert to manual if you hav ethe cash as the auto is crud. and way too complicated, the service manual section for the auto box is about 5 times as much if not more than the manual.

potentially possible. In which case I can probably provide you with one of those too if you need it :D lol

mine used to do that, box was nackered.... needed a replacement.. did try all the other options first tho, oil changed etc but no luck...... sorry dude

if im gonna replace the box im gonna consider a manual conversion, is this a massive job or just a really big one? lol

having just removed a manual conversion kit, id say putting it back in, is a pain in the ass, especially getting the clutch pedal in lol

it is a big job but theres plenty of people on here who have done it.

replacing with manual box is the sensible thing to do because you can never know how long your going to get out of a second hand auto.

you can usually pick up a full manual conversion kit for between £400-£600

not a massive job, but not easy either... a much more expensive option as a 2nd hand manual conversion kit (ie box and all parts needed) is going to cost you anywhere from£500-£700 depending on parts. There are loads and loads of writeups on here about doing it, so do a quick search.

There are some really fiddly bits like Ian says, although i am now the pedal master having taken mine on and off about 4 times! We found that the top bell housing bolts were a pita to get in.

Swapping auto box for auto box is MUCH easier and cheaper... unless you get a shoddy box which goes again and you have to repeat the whole process!

You can of course get a garage to do it, check out zedworld for their prices - i think it's about £1700, but you do get a new single piece propshaft if memory serves.

Well Mikey swore he would never do another manual conversion after doing his own, then again swore he would never do another one after doing Roses last Wednesday :D If you offered him a little wonga he might consider doing another and I'll lend him my garage to do it in, lol. Don't have a manual box to sell you though.

id say, for the sake of a few hundred miles would it even be worth it? to me it would just be throwing money away on a fix that isnt going to last too long, if it even fixes it at all.

I just got another box to replace the one i had, then ended up with a breaker with a working box lol (damn it) im waiting till next year and going manual conversion, but for now 200 on a known working good box, is enough to last me a year if i dont floor it everywhere.

But ultimately its your choice.
