Well, got my ARC intercoolers through today thanks to Peter (Nend)

Started to get it stripped down today - pic of the stock intercooler in place:

Couple of shots of the stock v ARC intercooler:

One thing I have found out is that one of the outlets is angled on the ARC intercooler as opposed to the straight outlet on the stock cooler - this means I am going to need to get some straight coupling pipes to fit the new ARC cooler to the stock hardpipes on the outlet side.

The main thing that amazed me was how restrictive the stock core is compared to the ARC core - I took a couple of pics but looking at it in real life it really is quite a difference!!

And a shot with new ARC on one side & stock on the other:

Will be trying to source some straight silicone hose tomorrow to get them all mounted up. If I cant get it tomorrow then there is a motorsport shop not too far from me that should stock it & should hopefully get some Monday :cool3:

Lurvely mate, best performing SMIC on the market due to their core design and slight difference in outlets :2guns:

Very nice Paul, I got some ARCs for mine last year and they are one of the best mods I have done, instantly noticable increase once you've got better flow in and out. :thumbup1:

Could I ask a huge favour, are you able to take a few pics of the ducts for me? If I know what the proper ARC ones look like it'll help me get some made up :)

just noticed you got rid of the standard washer bottle

no probs - will take a few pics tomorrow - you can see a pic here on the for sale thread: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=151837

:)

With the engine standard, does fitting a pair of ARC Intercoolers result in an increase in power then??

Furthermore from this; would you recommend upgrading the intercoolers even if you plan to keep the rest of the engine standard?

depends if you want to believe it but this is a review from CZP on ARC spec coolers (genuine ARCs are pretty hard to come by & cost a fortune!):

Description: New AVS ARC Spec Core Intercoolers are 15% more efficient (8-15 HP additional HP) then Original AVS and Intercoolers. AVS ARC Spec Intercoolers are designed to fit with the OEM Stock piping system. With a large 200x180x115mm ARC Core, HP Gains are 30-35HP on a stock setup. 57-92HP Gains can be experienced with larger turbo and accessory combination. These High Flow Rates are only achieved because of the ARC Spec Core, which is a Bar and Plate Design, compared to older Tube and Fin Designs.

Seems a little high to me but only a dyno would prove it! :)

quick update:

couldnt get any intake hose locally so will have to wait until monday to get some now.

removed the carbon canister today:

photo-55.jpg

With regards to the ducting I have found out the ducts are for Stillen intercoolers & not ARC ones - the ARC IC's are so big that they are angled away from the centre & do not sit as flat as other IC's - they were supposed to be modified to fit but the angle is too far out & there is so little clearance that I dont think there is too much I can do with them - I may be able to adapt the inner section which seems to be the only place they will fit - they sit so close to the bumper there may not be too much need for ducting as most of the air will be forced through them anyway!

Pic of them with the bumper attached:

Hopefully more on monday!! :gun_bandana:

quick update

Got some silicone intake connector hose today - cost a massive £3 each + VAT LOL!

only had a bit of time tonight after work so intercoolers now all fitted & connected fully.

moved my horns up to where the old airbox would be out of the way.

run her up just to ensure no air leaks from the IC's or the CC removal.

Was considering what to do with the expansion bottle & washer bottle - to be honest there is quite a bit of room behind them - will take some pics tomorrow. Am sure removing them is obviously better but am not too concerned - if it was a track car then sure, but for what I want I am pretty sure it will be fine :)

Should have time to refit the bumper etc tomorrow & give her a good blast home :hyper::hyper::hyper:

let me know if you decide to get rid of the ducts... maybe they'll go better with an earlier type bumper?

Hi Baz - they are Stillen ones for a 99 spec bumper - as said they just wont fit

I may still be able to chop them down as really its the inner part that needs the most ducting so I really want to adapt them somehow

The arcs just sit too far of an angle & this puts the ducts in completely the wrong place if you just mount them on!

Many aftermarket coolers need the ducts chopping to fit them, trouble is the ducts mask them so you cant see them, peeps need to see your aftermarket intercoolers :cool2: imho

oh yea!! plan is to just use the inner part of the duct to direct airflow better as there is a gap between the inner part of the IC & the intake in the bumper :)

lunchtime update LOL!

heres some pics for reference with space behind the IC's - stock washer bottle & expansion bottle installed but carbon canister removed - not too bad really:

Drivers side

Passenger side (with CC removed)

As you can see from the inside of the wheel arch there is good standard venting for the IC's:

and from the underside:

So am quite happy about leaving these in place.

Just a bit of finishing off to do tonight then give her a run :thumbup1:

Only just seen what a bargain they are $450. It would be a crime not to buy them.

Could of sworn they were a lot more expensive before.

thats the AVS ones on CZP - not genuine ARCS - AVS use "ARC spec cores"!! genuine ARC intercoolers are $2700!!

Yeah this is on my immediate upgrade list too, just need to sort out my Rad and cooling etc, then do my engine rebuild, then when it goes back in, intercoolers go in with it. Daren't do them before the rebuild, I just know something will blow and ruin all other plans.

That makes sense, I remember ARC's going for double the price of the AVS's 2nd hand previously.

The AVS's are a Bargain, cheaper than Z1's which are already very cheap......and ofcourse 2-3x cheaper than the big named brands.
