Some Zeds had a Bose system fitted. This did indeed have the amps fitted individually to each speaker. Bose is a bit weird all round and does lots of things non-standard. Other Zeds (eg my S3 and I suspect my S1 as well) didn't have a Bose but did have a rear speaker amp. One way to tell is look at the original Nissan units which I guess isn't practical for you. These guys http://www.carstereohelp.com/strnissan.htm have some pics look half way down the page for 300ZX and a Bose speaker looks like this

so clearly you don't have these any more.

My guess is that you need to check that 6 way connector on the harness. If it just has the 4 rear speaker wires, then you either had a Bose (and the speakers were replaced with your Harman Infinities) or didn't have a rear speaker amp.

If it has the grey and green silver in addition, then these are the ones which activate the rear speaker amp. If so, your car used to have one and now all we need to do is find it or find where it used to be!

And I just had some advice from Mr F (thanks Mr F) that, if fitted, the rear amp is fitted thusly: "The brackets attach to the rear of the strut tower and the inner RH rear metalwork. The Bose system option on JDM cars has the amp part built into the plastic speaker enclosure."

Update from Mr F "the round version of the rear amp (28060-50P00) appears on import cars between 09/93 and 01/97. A different version (not sure whether visually similar or just different brackets, part #28060-47P00) is found on the convertible 08/92 to 01/97."

So if the parts CD is to be believed, maybe rear amps (for non-Bose) were only fitted to JDM between those dates? Let me know about the wiring on the harness. Boy, Nissan haven't half worked hard to be really confusing about the audio fitments: Bose/non-Bose; rear amp / not rear amp; JDM/UK/Euro/US - all different and not very consistent :)

As far as I can see the harness has all six wires comming out of it including the grey one and the green and silver which go to the amp but I dont appear to have the amp! Took some pic's but my camera is useless at close up views but here they are anyway plus come pic's of the rear right strut tower but the only box there is the arial timer.

The connector which has the rear speakers should (I think) be the one ringed. It doesn't look as if it has 6 wires but maybe that's just the angle.

To connect to your Nissan unit(s) you should be able to lose the adapter arrowed and then they should just connect. I've looked at that adapter and it doesn't look like a Nissan ISO adapter, it looks as if it's a made-up thing with Nissan both ends. Odd.

That's the theory, anyway, how does that compare to the real stuff in the boot of your Zed?

You are right Mike that connecter has only 4 wires coming out of the six block connecter I was looking at the wrong one but the extra harness has the conecting block for the cd if I removed this harness I would have no connection for my cd.

Ah, you need that adapter to get a connector for this bit on your CD

attachment.php?attachmentid=60331&stc=1&d=1308830139

That makes sense. Does your CD unit have a little wiring diag on it like this one:

attachment.php?attachmentid=60332&stc=1&d=1308830386

I think yours will be slightly different as I can't see the Power On Sig lead (which is the yellow one in my earlier pics)

Oh, PS, I think that if your six way connector only has 4 wires, you may not have the rear speaker amp after all and will need a different Radio/cassette (or get a Nissan rear speaker amp but you'd need to plumb in the wires for it). If your Z is before 9/93, that would be confirmed by Mr F's info.

So with no amp wires there would have been no amp for rear speakers as the must have been Bose items with amps fitted to the speakers which have been replaced in my zed to the Harmon speakers:sweatdrop:At least I now know why the rear speakers are very faint.

No wiring diag on my cd Mike and it only says first reg in 1993 on the V5

Anyway thanks for all of yor help Mike as we have got to the bottom of the silent rear speakers so will try to get that sorted in the near future and will let you know how I get on mate.

Or that your Zed had normal speakers in the first place. But the result would be the same. If you want to pm me your chassis no, I'll look it up when I get home and confirm date of manufacture.

I wonder if you could put a small power amp in the rear and take the feed from the speaker harness then drive the speakers with the amp output? Would save running new wires.

Cheers - I don't mind that things don't work as long as I know why they don't work :)
