On allot of the Z's I've had, I went back to the OEM setup; if the car had something aftermarket.

Yes its an old setup, but for me the only one that looks right. I'm almost sure I have that same CD player in my garage too Gary.

My 99 version-s has an oem system which I can only assume is quite rare and original to the car and the spec sheet from new.

I love the look but pitty its defunk technology now! Well the tape bit is!

Yeah totally agree, but what's even more amusing is; how allot/most manufacturers continued on the "tape deck" right through to recent years! I have an 05 BMW, that has a tape deck up front and CD changer in the boot! Even the very last NSX's which was 05, had tape decks up front and optional cd stacker in the boot.

So Nissan offering the CD "option" back in the early 90's for the Z shows that they were pretty much on the ball I think. From memory they made the CD player standard on Z's [in the uk] from the second edition on.

Gary, what's your issue? This may help: http://www.300zxtt.co.uk/techaudio.html I've also got a lot more info I haven't had time to post.

Good site Mike:thumbup1: the problem I have with the cd unit is when you put in a cd the word "All" flashes up on the cd unit screen for a second then nothing:confused1: It maybe a faulty unit I need to get it checked.

Being original units they are all plug and play there is no bodged wiring to connect to so all is fine there. But I have no sound well very little sound comming from my rear speakers and I see on your site I might need a Micra adapter is this right? my zed is a 1993 series 2.

No you won't need an adaptor. Micra style is "late" (94 or 95 onward). My S3 has normal type. First guess is someone has fried or bypassed the rear amplifier.

Do your units look like this on the back:

And what did you have in there before?

OK. Did the rear speakers work OK with the Goodmans unit?

OK, I'll try to post more in a while but IF the rear speakers work OK with the Goodmans but are only very quiet with the Nissan, then someone's bypassed the rear speaker amp. On my S3, a "normal" Sony head unit gave normal vol out of the front and very loud out of the back. Took that out and put in Nissan, normal vol out of both front and rear. Of course, the Nissan units are designed to use the rear amp so this is what you'd expect.

If the rear amp has been bypassed, "normal" head unit will be OK vol on rear but Nissan won't be giving enough drive to the rear speakers without the amp it's expecting to be there.

Ahah. Got a pic of that somewhere but in the meantime, take out your rear speakers and see what connections they've got. At the dash end, are you certain the rear speaker feed is going into the harness OK and there aren't any odd-looking bypasses? If not, that would finger the bypass being at the amp. Hang on a tic.

Looks like it's next to the ABS actuator. There are differences between the JDMs/Europe etc but so far, this is the only reference I can find.

OK. I'll be interested if you get a chance to confirm / have pics. Like a dimwit I lost the pics I took after I tidied up the S3 (which had standard connectors like yours) in the centre console. And I've never found the rear amp phsically - just got my S3 one back in operation by taking our all the bodged wiring and putting back the OEM stereo. The 1996 workshop manual doesn't list the rear speaker amp so that matches with my S6 not having one (and maybe all the late cars, i.e. the Micra harness ones but that's just a guess).

Most people whip out the standard Nissan stereo from their JDM and bung in a normal one, then find out the rear speakers don't work then bodge. Either bypass the amp or run new wires. Me, I would prefer to get the OEM working the way Nissan intended if it's poss. They do look better / more in keeping with the car anyway in general.

So would be interested to know if your car does have a rear amp where the manual says it should be and what the bypass looks like - maybe the amp is still in working order with a spot of luck...

Not looking good took the panels of the rear hatch and found this plastic box with a printed circuit inside but looking at the diagram I now think its the electric arial timer so still looking for the amp.

Hmm. The manual pic isn't clear but it does seem to show something like that in the tailgate "power antenna timer". The "radio rear amplifier" is in a different place next to the ABS Actuator. Don't know where, sorry. But it looks as if it might be to the right of the boot rather than in the tailgate. I wonder if RHD layout is mirror image? I'll drop someone I know an email.

If you end up needing a code or a repair for the CD, this guy seems to know what he's talking about http://www.dndservices.co.uk/ when I was trying to work out how to get the OEM kit to work in mine, he was helpful. As it turned out, it was the wiring bodge responsible and code not needed. But if I did need a code, I'd go to him.

A little more thought:

  1. perhaps it was there but has been removed
  2. can you see where the wiring goes from the speakers - does that give a clue?
  3. perhaps it wasn't fitted OEM? Do you have the pair of wires in the 6way connector on the harness. It's the one where the 4 rear speakers are driven from. If the harness connector has 4 wires (2 for each rear speaker) plus a gray earth and green/silver stripe, then these two are for the rear amp. If that harness only has 4 wires, then a rear amp wasn 't fitted - that's my guess, anyway.
