Ok guys, just went to move the car and the starter motor is making clicking sounds coupled with ignition lights going out when it would be cranking.

Sounds to me like the battery is dead/flat.

First of, does anyone know the correct battery for the Z, and were the cheapest place to buy a reasonable one is for worst case scenario ?

No-one I know nearby has a charger I can borrow, so looks like I am going to have to spend again :(

What do I need to look for to ensure I get one man enough for the correct battery ?

You a member of the AA or RAC? If so you could call them out and they will check the batter for you. They have a meter to put on it to check if all the cells are dead!

You can pick up a set of jump leads from most petrol stations for around a tenner, get her started and take to a garage or auto electrician to test for 14.5 volts.

Think Jeff will do mail oredr on batteries

If you do purchase one else where, don't go lower than 70ah if you can help it.

Smithy

Assuming all is correct with the alternator you don't need a charger mate, simply a cheap set of jumps leads to start it then err drive!

A garage will test the battery in about 10 seconds for you, if it reads 14.5volts the alternator is charging the battery okay. They can also check for knackered cells in the battery.

However if you really want a charger, any 12 volt charger.

smithy

they do draw power constantly as certain componets are constantly live. so its probally flat. most proper battery shops will tst the battery outy the car for you and do a deep charge for a small fee. then once cahrged upo fire the car up and test the volts across teh batt running and off. you shouldget 12v engine off and 14 odd engine running.

Thats probably half the problem, the car has been sat for a while and only driven short distances while I have been sorting bits and bobs out, and thats likely to continue for a month or so yet.

Well I managed to borrow a battery charger ... no idea if it works lol.

It had been sat in the guys shed for a few years, but it outputs ~12.5v tested with a multimeter. The amp guage is sat at 0 though so I guess I just have to wait and see if its worked after a few hours.

The battery registered 11.85v on its own with the multimeter.

i hardly drive mine and had that prob plus my earth strap was loose, now i just plug battery up to charger so fully charged whenever i need to use car.

Well battery charged overnight and started car fine this morning, so fingers crossed it holds charge :)

BTW What is the correct dimension battery to fit properley on the tray ? (thanks Andy :thumbup1:)

just check it now the engines running to see if you get your 14v's just to check the alternator. mines gonna be off the road for a few weeks yet so ive disconnected it from the terminals. any one see this as an issue?

Thanks, Jeffs/Zedworld look like good value, but hopefully mine will hold charge :)

But that answers my size question .... its a big beastie battery

just to possibly help out, i sell chargers and numax batteries which would go out at cost to any subscribed club member, if you could let me know the code i could price a battery for you (numax brand) 3 yr warrnty. and i sell the RING brand chargers aswell as draper

16a smart charger would be £39.59+ vat procuct here

Hmmm ... well after 2 weeks parked with a fully charged battery, its not got enough to start again :(

Either something is draining it, or its foobar !

There is power enough to move seats, work the central locking etc, just not enough to start.

The only recent addition is a set of powered seats, so I have unplugged them as they have permanent live and may have a fault thats drawing power ? I'll see if it holds charge this time.

If not, how much would delivery be Hollandrob81 ?

Might be worth putting a multi meter in series to check for a parasitic drain,

I think the natural draw from the clock and central locking etc' should be no more than 80 Milli amps.

A little while back I had a parasitic drain of 3/4 of an amp,:sweatdrop:

killed the battery in a matter of days.:excl:

Eventually tracked it down to a corroded multi plug connector down by the fuse box in the drivers side foot well.

Thanks for that tip redwine :thumbup1: I measured it and have ~ 0.9-1.2 ma (varies a bit presumably due to the immobilizer led flashing).

After charging it started car no prob yesterday afternoon, this morning no go again :(

Looks like you may be getting a PM soon Rob ;)

I take it the battery is the same on all Z32's ... positive and negative post location and overall sizes etc regardless of UK or JDM ?

no worries, just let me know, and just for info. the battery is at cost price, i.e what i would pay for it through work, no profit on battery or postage (which would be overnight courier) and this is a one off really as a favour :-) cant do it all the time or work will ask questions lol

battery would be numax brand and i can get pretty much as many years warranty on it as long as i work there :-)
