Hello hello everyone,

 

I have been a registered lurker for a few months now since i finally plucked up the courage to look for a Zed to buy.

 

Live in Surrey and currently drive a ............ 206CC:scared:

 

Getting rid or palming off to the GF to be exact so i'm now looking for my 1st Zed.

 

Always wanted 1 since i drove a 100NX years ago and thought **** it i'ma have 1, it's now or never.

Welcome to the club - you'll find plenty of friendly advice on here and some pretty good cars for sale at the moment too, in the for sale section. What are you after? TT? N/A? SWB, LWB?

Manual TT is the wish but the GF appears to be inclined towards the Convertible, TT is what i'm looking at tonight so i shall see how that goes and makes some choices from there.

 

Hard work trying to find 1 near me i can tell ya!

Look at a few, as it becomes clear the difference of a good one and a bad one.

Dont be affraid to ask questions. we are a good bunch and lots of folks will give good advice, plus some stupid banter, but its all good.

Drive a few before you buy and don't limit yourself to cars which are in your local area. You may need to travel for the best cars. Also, members on here will be more than happy to help you look at a car if its in their local area - all you have to do is ask. If you buy a good en, you'll be smiling from ear to ear. If you buy a wrong un, your bank manager will be the one who's smiling!

I'm not overly bothered if i'm honest. As long as it's a Manual TT with leather interior i will be happy, sorry if that seems very noobish or stupid depending on your preference.

 

Main reason for me search is I've always loved them and wanted 1 since i had a 100NX as previously mentioned.

 

Not in any rush to find 1 as I have a car atm which does not get "sold" until i find the Zed i want.

 

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The reason i mention Distance is being able to get someone along with me to view it and also if i do buy it i can't drive 2 cars back home ::biggrin:

well im only 45 mins from you (in the zed) i will assist if any come up down this neck of the woods, that you want to see.

If you're struggling to get there - get someone else to check it for you - if its a good en you can always make some travel arrangements, but it will save you time travelling to see lemons. ANyway... what do you think girlfriends are for? She can drive the pug back home!

Ok, well the viewing tonight was educational, I now know I MUST have a Zed! But if I was to buy that particular 1 it would be my heart wanting it because it's a Zed and it's right there but my head says keep looking.

 

Keep looking it is I guess, would rather buy 1 I can enjoy and not have to do fixes to but we shall see how the hunt goes.

Welcome buddy.....As stated, find a good one, they are out there. Plenty of help and advice available on here.

What i must learn is to be patient and not rush.

My max limit is 4k though so i don't even know if thats a fair price for a decent 1 or will get me 1 that will require work after?

Sadly if it's the latter then it's not something i will be able to do due to funds being pumped into something else once car has been bought.

I'll be honest mate, I thought owning a zed would be a lot cheaper than it actually is. I bought my car for 3.5k and was expecting to have to spend a few hundred making it mechanically sound. And, to be fair, for a while that's how it worked out. But then disaster struck.

 

I think, if you find a good one and have reasonable luck, then it will only cost the same as any other performance car. If you are handy with spanners it will cost even less. The age of these cars means very often they will require work and some parts changing. There are cars out there in your budget that will be maintained to a high standard - but any car with 150mph+ performance needs to be kept in good condition. Do not expect to get away with bills similar to a super mini etc. The biggest cost by far, if you're using it every day will be petrol. These cars average anything from 200-300 miles on 75quid. I couldn't afford to use my zed as daily transport..

Its hit and miss mate. £4000 should buy you a very nice one, but as ive found in the past, not all cars are as nice as they seem on the face of it!

Petrol and maintenance is something that i will happily deal with and put up with, what i can't afford is to buy a car sub par standard and fix it before i've even got it so to speak.

You really do have to check them out mate, I thought I was getting the deal of the century when I bought mine, was on ebay and because it finished during the day and I had access to Ebay from work, I got it for less than £1500, then when I got there, rear tyres needed before I could even drive it home, that put it over £1500 immediately, new plugs, oil change, oil leak fixed and a few little niggles, over £2K now, then I drove it daily for about 5 months, it never failed to start, or crap out on me, nothing, but I could tell it wasn't right, started investigating, sills were rotten, various other obvious things, broken bolt holes on the plenum etc. etc. Then got it MOT'd and waited for the news, front shocks were leaking, steering boots knackered, rear drop links basically all but gone on holiday, both sills needed replacing completely, couldn't just be fixed, and more to the point, both parts of the rear sills, then a whole host of other problems.

 

That being said, it's nearly on the road now, next Tuesday with any luck, and it'll owe me about £4K - £5K by the time I'm done (Stopped counting now) and it'll be pretty mint, including re-spray. So I recommend, either, find a REALLY good one, or find one that's quite nice and cheapish so you expect the problems, then get a mechanic to sort it all out if you're not confident yourself.

 

Jims car would be my best suggestion to you, £1800 as it is, with 400BHP(ish, confirm Jim/Ian) and running sweet as a nut, then spend some reddies getting the bodywork sorted and whatever other small bits may need doing, and you've got a freaking excellent Z there.

That sir is exactly what i want to avoid, i can afford to pay for something that goes wrong later down the line but i can't afford to buy the car THEN fix it up to a standard that i want.

 

I'm after a car i can buy and be happy with for the first 3/4months and then have to fix things, anything before and the car will be a sitting duck. Funds for car are strictly 4k as anything after that goes towards moving into a new place with the GF which we want to happen end of year latest.
