I don't know how many of you have already seen my facebook status but i thought i would ask you all to just take care on the roads.

 

Early this morning on my way to Gloucester i was driving along the A436 when i heard a bang and then this awful scraping sound, so i stopped. As i looked my brake lights were lighting up a white car in the trees the other side of the road.

 

now there were no lights on on this car but i could see it was badly damaged so thought i'd best check it out.

 

As i approached it i could smell hot oil and sure enough trapped inside was the driver,a car pulled up and the young bloke got out but didn't want to approach the car but called for all the emergency services.

 

Now as i have said all along the chances with an accident being come apon by a non professoinally trained person ie:someone like me is much more likely to happen than the emergency services.

 

I know absolutely nothing about first aid but all i knew was that i should support his head to keep his airway clear and this is what i did.

 

the guy was jammed in the car tighter than a tin of sardines! and i was helpless to anything more than i already was as i could basically only get my hands in between the gap in the door pillar and the windscreen.

 

so please be careful on the roads and think about who might be first on the scene of an accident.

Because standing there holding this guys head in my hands and feeling the heat and life drain from him til there was nothing is something that i sure won't ever forget!!

wow that sure made me stop and think for a bit. you did a great thing by stopping and helping, and you made sure that the guy didn't die alone. even though he was passing away I bet he knew he wasn't alone. I hope you take something positive away from what happened mate cos you sure did a good thing.

sorry to hear it Mark, you did all you could and accidents happen unfortunately, as Dave said above I'm sure he knew you were there which I'm sure meant a lot to him. :(

A very traumatic experience, R.I.P. to the young driver and well done for being with him as that would have ment a lot and offered some comfort to him.Were you offered counselling by any of the emergency response teams? This could help you in the next few weeks mate.

First of all well done on stopping and actually being with the guy, many would have simply called the police from the roadside and driven on. It takes a lot out of a person to watch someone else die, I've been there just recently in December and it messed us all up quite a bit. If you feel you need to seek councelling(sp?) don't think you're being weak or shouldn't take up someones time, go do it. Even the police, ambulance and fire service personnel will go for councelling when they feel they need it.

So sorry to read this Mark, tragic news. Good call on your part to act the way you did. Hope you're ok today

sorry to hear that mate, glad you stayed behind and did what you had to do. RIP im sure the family of the person involved would have wished some one stayed with him than not. so good on you.

Fantastic buddy, really well done, as a lot have pointed out, most people would have either just driven past, or telephoned the emergency services from the other side of the road.

 

What you did was great mate, and I am fairly sure that even if the ambulance service were there right away, it sounds to me they wouldn't have been able to save him, if he passed away that quickly, it sounds like his injuries were so severe that nothing would have been able to be done for him. I bet his family and friends will take comfort knowing that at least someone was with him in his last moments.:angel::angel: RIP young man.

In my ambulance service days, there was no councelling like there is now, we just had to get on with it all!!! So feel free to talk mate, I know exactly what you are going through.

you are right about one thing because if god himself had been stood there he couldn't have saved him!

 

At least i can say i did all could, but it has made me realise that i need to do some sort of first aid course even if i never get to use it. Being on the road all the time you never know whats round the next corner.

 

As they say "a little knowledge can go a long way".

 

The guy never felt a thing so hopefully that will be of some comfort to his family.

my work sent me on a 1 week course last year, if the teacher is a good one like mine was then you will learn a hell of allot, i haven't needed to use it yet except for putting a bandage on a lad's leg here in work because he somehow stabbed himself with the Stanley? Anyway, always a handy bit of Knowledge to have. And as most said, well done for turning around and for at least being there for the poor chap, most would have been scared or not even bothered to stop.

Mental sorry i saw this on your facebook mate, good on you for stopping and doing what you could, as stated before most folks would just call the services. But you didnt. It hits you in a way that cant be decribed, unless you have been put in that situation. sometimes you feel nothing, other times it will go the other way.

But its good to talk.

as above really you have done a really good thing there and i hope your not to affected by it.
