pistons are cast.

 

They're actually forged. But they're old and degrade.

...to add, it's all in the fueling. Uprated forged pistons will self destruct just like stock if the fueling is wrong. They're not immune. Stock pistons can take decent power providing the fueling and fuel is spot-on. You just have a higher margin for error with uprated. But they'll still melt if the fueling is wrong.

I thought the piston were standard cast ones not forged? Isn't it because the supra has forged piston that you can up the power over 400 easier/cheaper than you can a zed?

Correct mate, pistons in both the N/A and TT are the only NON forged part.

 

Given that fuelling is limited on full boost on upped boost cars to No. 6 piston on pre 94 zeds, this is usually the 1st piston to go.

20 years plus of age and just a tad out on fuelling is bad for stock pistons.

 

Forged are cheap as chips these days, stick em in and be done with it.

they could of done, just because someone knows the in's and outs of uprated parts, doesnt mean they know the stock engine.

So as per the thread title what is the power a stock block can handle. I thought it was about 450 -500 fwhp with a healthy block and monitored fuelling

I doubt it. 400bhp seems to be the figure. However as Smithy suggests, probably not a great idea taking a 20 year old engine and just slapping some big tubs on it. I would always say, if you want good power get a good base first.

Depends how it's set up. Standard pistons can take quite a bit of boost IF your fueling is cock-on.

so are the pistons forged or cast then??? yeah i understand about the fueling, a guy off the mr2 owners clubs burnt a hole in a set of forgies because his fueling wasn't right, he had them in the car less then a week!!!

cool, i'm just curios, i'm not planning on doing anything lol, was just enjoying reading the topic :)

wow, that's pretty impressive!!! i don't think people realise how important the fueling is, prime example being that idiot off the mr2 owners club, he was warned time and time again, he seemed to think it was all about the boost and that forged pistons were designed to take the abuse :)

this is why the zed is mapped rich, on higher revs, and aftermarjket chips esp. to overfuel slightly and get some burn off is far healthier than underfeul and melt things. although obviously you dont want too much causing borewash. i would say gauging from club member is general taht around the 400bhp mark is about a safe limit to stock interanls. obvioulsy engine health to start with will dictate this. but many are running 370 regualy without issues. i think if your going for big power 450 plus then really a rebuild is the only way forward, and will produce a more relaible and strong platform, pulling out the motor whacking big tubs injectors and upping the boost to try and wrangle out 500 bhp on a 20 year old motor will end in tears eventually, and cost more in the long run. do it properly first time or not at all. i also believe that 40bhp is pretty much the limit of usefull power on teh zed on the road, its hard enough to use 300bhp on teh road these days, with conjestion dropping speed limits and fun spoilers everywhere you look. not to mention that power has to make it to the floor else you will just be a big v6 twin turbo beyblade, with a side order of hedge.

Cheapo 400bhp brew kit:

 

Air Filter

Exhaust

Boost controller

ECU chip

 

Should be good for about 370-390bhp for a few thousand miles, shortly before in grenades into a billion little pieces. :whistling:

 

If you want to do things a little more responsibly, add:

 

Larger injectors

Uprated SMIC's

 

If you want to do things properly, add:

 

Pistons (+rebuild)

Reconditioned tubs/new (larger) tubs

Downpipes

Decats

 

These are just a rough idea and not exhaustive - but probably not a million miles from the truth either. Tuning a zed to produce reliable big-bhp is a whole world of financial pain. Whether you do it right, or do it wrong - its bloody expensive.

 

Best thing you can do is hope someone sells a recently rebuilt engine with uprated parts..
