After an enjoyable with my son at the fleet air museum in somerset, i was travelling back to wales, when crossing the severn bridge........ BANG

my first reaction was a blowout, doing about 70 mph i braced myself to control a spinout. looking in the mirror to see how soon i could pullover while hitting the hazards all i could see was smoke.

managed to get over to the hard shoulder and switched engine off to go inspect the damage. no tyres gone, got back in and started engine, it made a horrible noise and a load of smoke came out of the bonnet, thinking it was gonna catch fire i got us both out as quick as i could and retreated a good 200 yards up the road.

luckily enough im in the AA, so i called em out, and after a half hr wait on a breazy bridge being thankfull that it wasnt raining he turned up.

He checked the water level which was fine then looked under the car and pointed out the big pile of oil all over the road. "looks terminal" he said, maybe a rod gone thru the engine.

yes i admit i swore at this point before getting towed the remaining 50 miles home thinking the only good point of it was i didnt have to pay for the bridge.

car now parked up and waiting for its fate which i havent decided yet

theres nothing obvious at all under the bonnet, tried to make i video of the noise it makes yesterday but due to the wet weather all u could hear was the fan belt squealing. the oil comes out from rite underneath somewhere, dumped a load more oil yesterday when i started it

How does it looks under the bonnet? any oil been sprayed anywhere? anything seem broken/missing?

Boy I know how you feel. Just thought that if Zedworld could tell you exactly what was wrong, you could take it from there, at least you know a specialist has told you then, so the info will be the right info if you know what I mean........:confused1:

no it was a later 2.9 version of the colonge. well if its headgasket you will find that most liklly the oil and water have mixed. try turning the block by hand with the plugs out and listen. you should hear and feel each cylnder, free up and loosen. if thats all smooth id say unlikly internal damage. you can always pop a little stick of some kind down the plug hole see if it comes back covered in oil. obviopusly check the filler cap, for smeg. if youve blown a piston out the block your gonna see it from underneath witha torch should be pretty obvious. if you start it up and makes a bnois what sort of sound does it make? what does the oil pressure do? what is the oil level? i would guess you have probally snapped a rod. or its slipped a tooth on the timing. im sure one of the techies will point you in the right way ... oh well see it as n opertunity whatever the result.

Good idea as depending on the cover you have they will do a 2nd onward tow to garages. If you go for buying a breaker I may be interested in going 1/2's

if there anything like the rac they will only tow it x amount of miles as a 2nd tow 20 25 miles if i remeber correctly. not very helpfull is it :(
