I've been driving my car to almost empty to see what I can get out of a tank...I've been waiting for the fuel light to come on and now on the empty line with no light, is this normal?

I believe the light is meant to get brighter as the fuel gets emptier, but I have no light at all.

mine has never worked either, and have run out several times! nothing wrong with my clocks as far as connections etc. can only presume it is the sender in the tank, so your not the only one mate :)

On my UK spec the gauge would drop about 5mm below the empty mark and then the light would come on may be the same case that you havent got anywhere near empty yet. Carry around a jerrycan of fuel and drop it right below the empty mark you should see it come on then :)

I have EL dials so light does not shine through when the symbol is lit, to test of course when you think your fuel is low try putting the two wires from something like this

under the orange bulb holders two contacts, 50% chance you get them in the right position first time, you could then position your new low fuel light anywhere you want then

The original bulb for low fuel is a clear T10 with an orange rubber johnny on it

Wow - Didn't expect so many responses. Everything is still standard as far as I know, original gauges and bulbs, so it could simply be the bulb. I guess I'll get a can and carry some spare petrol around with me, then let it drop below the empty mark. I have an import but don't imagine its different from UK models.

At least I'm not the only one with a weird light! Cheers! :)

Well when you post on here brace yourself for an avalanche of help and advice from z lovers :winkiss:

I guess the bulb has failed mine is the same, can go right down to nothing and no light :(

Could well be the bulb, but the fuel gauge, along with the rest of the gauges have poor accuracy. You may well have a lot more fuel than you think in there.

The tank holds 72 litres (about £100 of super unleaded), but there have been lots of threads in the past from people claiming they can only get get 50 or 60 litres in (becuase its not as empty as they thought).

Good news everyone, I think my fuel light does work!

Intentionally I drove until I got 50 miles out of my £20 fuel from empty, I was determined to have at least 50 miles!

I parked up and for a moment I'm sure I saw the petrol pump symbol on the guage light up! It lit up only for a moment whilst the petrol sloshed about. Is the pump symbol the low fuel light? I was expecting a normal light to come on, not for the symbol to illuminate!

It's very exciting. lol
