One has to remember that the basic engine design predates the car itself. Whilst the Z32 was conceived over 20 years ago, the engine was based on that used in the previous incarnation - the Z31.

Sure it was fettled a bit to bring it in line with the standards of the day; but add 2 turbos and it will drink faster than a medical student at happy hour in the union bar!!

Modern engines have come on in leaps and bounds with economy - you only have to look at the latest German machinery to see that. The bigger, powerful BMW and Merc petrol engines are prime examples of how things have improved over the years. The 3.5 litre in my SLK churns out 305bhp but the car can still average 28mpg with very "spirited" driving! Back in 1990-1995 your top of the range 2 litre petrol sports family car (eg Cavalier SRi or Mondeo Si et all) would barely top that average; with equal "spirited" driving!

I remember having a 6 month old Cav SRi back in 1991 and being quite chuffed to see 30mpg.......

It's just progress! In another 10 years, we may still probably still be driving cars that run on fossil fuels; however the engines will be more powerful litre for litre but will run on even less fuel. Maybe:online2long:

used to love my cav sri saloon. sold it when i bought my z.

i hardly drive beast these days stuck in garage very awkward with 2 young kids and mrs stuck in garage so a £10 lasts me a month lol,and will do 35 miles on that

Couldn't care less, I've always had guzzlers, 2.8i V6 Capri (x2 of these over the years), 2.5 3 series, then 5 series BMWs (x2 of each series), 5.3 V12 XJS Jag, 3.0 Turbo Supra (MkIII), 2.6TT R32 GTR, 4.0 V6 Ford Falcon (Whilst in NZ) , 2.0 Turbo Scooby (Also NZ), 2.5 TT Mitsi VR4 (x2 of these whilst in NZ, one Legnum and one Galant) and now the 300ZX TT. We have an 8 seater people carrier that's even a 2.4 Turbo Diesel but a lot better on MPG lol

This says it all 18mpg Urban, brand new right out of the box

U.S Gallon does not equal UK Gallon. A U.S Gallon is 3.7 litres. A U.K Gallon is 4.5 litres

18mpg (u.s) = 22 mpg (uk) city

and

24mpg (u.s) = 29 mpg (uk) Highway

sorry to ressurect an old thread! i average around 20mpg no matter how i drive!! 240 miles out of a full tank. mine is a tt uk auto with zedworld chip japseed cat back and apexi filter. im happy enough with that!

well i drove from liverpool to london with a full tank and i still had under half a tank left. The distance was about 270 miles! i was doing 70 all the way using cruise control :)

How much under half a tank?

How much under half a tank?

Well when i looked it was just under the middle needle by about 0.2 cm. My mpg is amazingly good as long as i dont use boost. The trip from liverpool to london i did use boost to overtake a m3 and couple of other times too :). But then again mines had full nissan service history and has been well maintained!

Put £80 of v power, as my fuel tank plays up, so not sure if it was to the brim.
