I have some UK door cards and getting some UK seat belts, i have a jap with the belts on the door.

This subject has come about a few times, but i know a few have done it. I realise the holes are there but with no thread, so the top hole, which is the trickiest as there is no room behind the pillar, is the bone of contention.

Is it best to weld a plate with the captive nut or is there not enough metal for strength?

Anyone got any pics of their UK B pillar to have a look.

Cheers

Graham

just a thought on this graham . would it be better/stronger to get a plate say 6inch by 3inch and weld a nut to this and then fix this to the pillar . cut out the original hole so the nut will sit inside . this way you could get a larger area of weld for strength . just for good measure you could fire a load of rivets around it too . i was faced with this problem myself but decided to stick with the jap belts to save all the hassle as my weldings about as good as peter crouch doing limbo.

FIA approved seat belt anchors are available. just enlarge the hole enough to let the nut sit inside and continuously weld round the plate.... Job done. If you are not confident of your abilty to weld properly get someone who can.

Mines a series 1 lol, so although there is a hole there, no thread. I read somewhere that that part of the B pillar is only a few mill thick. I will have another look tomorrow to be sure and if its a goer i will be getting it welded professionally, not going to jeopardise safety.

yeh get it done properly, if you get it all slaggy and shit and full of air. it will be about as strong as cuckoo spit and look like it too. i seem to remeber something from my welding days that a properly laid 1ch of weld can hold a ton in weight

Lol, good anecdote. I havent welded since i was at college, many moons ago and by the time i hire a welder and practise, may as well get it done by a pro.

No not really, but i just got some UK door cards and getting the seat belts. I have some alcantara door panels im recovering them with, but they are also from a UK car.

I dont want to have to cut the panel to fit the Jap door card, unless i have too.

I got the rear seat belts aswell to replace the lap belts, but the mounting points are there for the rear.

oh are they that something i may do myself then. proper seatbelts in teh rear saves lives doesnt it lol you know what i mean. you should pop across the water next weekend man sunday the 28th i believe. may be a few zeds at a local jap car meet

I would love to, but working in Birmingham on the 28th at the nec metropole for a party for Witherspoon and will be in the van lol

That seems a bit steep for a bit of welding, its not like replacing a couple of sills or am i just out of touch with the price of services?

^^^^ This is what I did. Its the FIA harness mounts I used.

I just had to cut them down to fit in the pillar as they were too wide. Once cut down I inserted the plate through a gap further down the pillar and pulled it up into location. This way the plate sits within the pillar, behind the sheet metal rather than welded to the outside of it.

Thanks for the link Dave. Do you still have to have the plate welded or will the tightening of the nut and bolt be ok?

Cheers
