I want to refurbish my standard alloys, but they still have the tyres on, how would i go about removing them? Not worried about damaging the tyres, they're all bald anyway :p

you can do it with a very long spanner and a lot of hard work but its really really difficult.

wouldnt even attempt it. I tried taking a 13" tyre off a steel rim once, ended up cutting most of it off but still had the outer section attached - there was no way I could remove it!

As said - it's pretty difficult as you have to break the seal without the benefit of a press.

If you're not worried about the tyres, I'd try refurbing the wheels without removing them - at least you don't have to worry about getting overspray etc over them.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

True and true lol

i've never even thought about it, let alone done it, but can you not just chop them up? And use a dremmel or someting for the radials hard to get to?

i suppose they could be chopped too :)

i still think the best option is a local garage though as said they should do four for less than £20.00 :D

i got a couple off a few years back with a couple of long screwdrivers and alot of hard work, but to be fair i also took quite abit of paint of the rim, i certainly wouldn't try i again, my arms still haven't recovered from it haha.

Best all round is to get a tyre bay to remove and dispose of them, if you cut them off you will still have to pay for safe disposal of the bits as putting them into the bin is a NO NO:no:

Years ago it was easy to get them off. You let the air out and put them on the floor and let another car drive over the tyre, that got it of the rim. Then with a half tidy set of tyre levers you could get them off the rim. Of course then they were quite narrow so easy peesy, now with wide rims, its a right barsteward and as Jeff states, what do you do with them afterwards. I took a headlight to my local recycling centre and was told that they only took household waste. I pointed out that they did oil recycling and of course car batteries but he was programmed to repeat the same message. Luckily his mobile went off and it was obviously a personal call and he turned his back and the headlamp went in the skip. By far the best result is your local tyre company and £20.
