Download this

http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

Run it from safe mode. copy and paste the report in to this thread.

Also download this, but don't use it unless we find out what hijackthis reports. as this is a very powerful program that will delete running processes and remove the file, we need to find out what file the virus is.

Also if you haven't run a full system scan with a known good anti virus. for god sake don't use nortons antivirus, that thing hasn't got a clue what to do when it finds anything.

we had one last week. we had to strip everthing out the computer and re install everything ggrrrr

Nope... Think Point is a bogus Anti-Virus virus!!

Just found this...

Like many of you, I just had to deal with this one. Still in the process of eliminating it fully but was able to kill it.

Start the computer in SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT.

When the machine loads up on the command prompt type: regedit

Now navigate to the following lines and delete them if they appear:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PAV

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “thinkpoint”

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon “Shell” = “%Documents and Settings%\[userName]\Application Data\hotfix.exe”

For my particular case I found the hotfix.exe and deleted it. This allowed me to log into my desktop again.

I am now in the process of running Malewarebytes to eliminate anything else that might be left.

Hope this helps.

Worth a shot, and always check and update your security... and run it every so often as well.

eh !

The first post made is a Joke - i'm sure as i've herd it before !

As in the joke is that WINDOWS is a virus, you cant do anythin with it, it wont go

away and causes more problems than anything !!

Although i'm all for windows and prefer it to linux or mac-os !!

read the first post properly lol, "windows think point" its a virus that pretends to be part of windows antivirus.

to be on honest, apart from the odd occasion, most viruses come from porn sites. i stopped using antivirus long ago. mainly due to not needing it. stay away from the dodgy sites. don't click stupid links in emails from friends unless they tell you personally that they are sending you it. and avoid clicking links in Messenger programs, unless like emails the person has specified they are sending it.

Avast is a very good program.

And to those that don't use an Anti-Virus.... I hope you haven't got anything stored on your PC that can't be replaced.

I've re-installed my main PC at least twice and my laptop about three times due to problems with viruses, and not one of them was due to 'Dodgy porn sites'!!!! You never know where you're going to get one from.

It didnt pick mine up :(

I use Webroot Antivirus (Same people that make Spy Sweeper) and Malwarebytes with Spybot S&D :).

I wouldnt let Norton ever touch a pc, never seen so much shite in all my life.

don't get me wrong, i used to use antivirus software. but for the past 5 years i stopped. i haven't had any viruses since i stopped using them. as for storing things on a PC. simple things can stop you ever losing important stuff. like USB hard drive back ups. or better yet. Memory cards / USB flash drives. everything is prone to stuffing up, so if its photos, store them online, or print them off. Music is replaceable. movies are replaceable, games are replaceable, If you have business files on your hard drive. always make back ups. that way if your hard drive goes down the pan. you always have a back up. or you can always partition your drive and use the first half for the OS and the second half for all doc / important files. Most viruses attack the OS in an attempt to be fecking annoying. or use a secondary harddrive to store important information on.

Simple things like this mean you will never have a problem. even if you get a problem.

Virus scanners always hog a system. even if you don't notice it. they are always scanning files, when you start a new program up, your anti virus scans all files associated with that program. when you down load anything, it scans it. it runs a system scan more often than not, when you don't want it too.

Only a few Antivirus software i know of, stops the virus before it even gets onto your PC. all others let you know that your now infected and try to deal with it in one of 2 ways, delete the file, or put it in the virus vault, only old viruses they know how to deal with, new viruses they haven't a clue about until someone updates the virus definitions and releases a update.

So where is the point, you are just as much at risk having antivirus, than you are with out it. new viruses are always going to get onto your system before antivirus software knows how to effectively deal with it.

and what i said about the dodgy porn sites is true 90% of viruses are downloaded from porn sites. "this video needs you to install player.exe" lol

Others jump on your PC as soon as you enter the site. i cant count the amount of peoples PC's ive sorted out due to viruses. for them to say "i haven't looked at porn or anything so i haven't got a clue where it came from" then you check there web browsing history and find that the last entry was "bigbutchrussianchicks..co.ru"

Windows xp is the worse for viruses though, as it has absolutely nothing stopping something being stealth installed onto your system like vista or windows 7 has.

Nice reply :D

I'm currently running three hard drives (one of which is partitioned for the OS) My anti-virus (Avast) does exactly what it says on the tin... EX- I downloaded a file the other week, as soon as the file finished Avast detected a virus within it and quarantined it! No problem, the file was deleted immediately and no bother was had. Isn't that what they are supposed to do? Nothing would of been able to detect something until it had arrived! Surely? I've not noticed any performance issues with this PC at all with Avast, and previously when I was using AVG, but then I am using a Core2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz and I'm on a Pent 4 2Ghz on the laptop as well and don't notice any issues.

I'm sure it's Horses For Courses, and currently I'm very happy running it like this.
