Hi I have not had much luck so far in selling my mk1 gs300 sport but am now interested in findning out if anyone has had any experience of selling a private number plate to one of these companies that buy or offer them as I might get a few quid for the private plate that is on it.

Can anyone recommend any good companies that they might have used or know are ok?

Think the companies act as like an agency and sell it on your behalf for a cut. Don't think they actually buy them from you.

Might be worng though

If it's a really good plate, they may buy it off you - otherwise you're best sticking it on retention and asking them to advertise it... problem is it's £100-odd/ year to keep on retention so may not be worth bothering if it's a cheapy.

Put it on retention £120 for 12 months and sell it yourself! Just advetise it everywhere you can think of. Someone will have it, what's the point of paying a company to do exactly what you could do for free.

Most of the companies don't own the plates, when you buy them they get them off the dvla and at a cut.

i think the £25 is for every subsequent year. the first year is wayyyy more than that. :taz:

Taken from the DVLA site.......................

the fee to retain - £105 for one year, £130 for two years or £155 for three years

IE an £80 fee for assignment +£25 per year retention.

Renewing a retention document

About four weeks before the document runs out, a reminder letter is sent to the grantee to extend the right of retention for one, two or three years.

Complete the retention document and enclose the fee of £25 for one year, £50 for two years or £75 for three years. The fee is not refundable.

I have a retention document here of my own and this is how it operates.

Spot on! In my earlier post I put £120 to put it on retention but it is infact £105 as slick pete says.
