Hi Guys, Me and the Zed got stuck in a traffic jam and after about 40 minutes the (stock) temp gauge suddenly hit the top stop! I pulled onto the hard shoulder, turned the car off and watched plumes of smoke come out from the bonnet.

After getting home on the back of the AA truck, I discovered that I have plenty of coolant in the rad and no burst hoses. I started the car and let it run for a bit as it sounded fine. Suddenly, there's odd noises (bubbly spurty sounds) and oil smoke coming from the drivers side of the engine.

I can't spot the source of the oil leak and pressure seems OK. Any ideas what might have popped?

Eek doesnt sound so good! Stock gauges tend not to move until the temperature is terminally high, probably head gaskets at very least. Chances are the damage has been done but lets hope not!

same thing happened to me last year buddy. water pump seized. blew a head gasket and warped a head. new engine time. do a compression test, check the oil cap for smeg (and if you feel ok to fire her up, see if your blowing smoke from the pipes and have rough idle) you may have been lucky and just blown one of the little water lines in the engine way they make a hell of alotta steam and fuss. but tbh mate sounds bad think you will be paying zedworld a visit. DO NOT DEAL WITH NIPPON!in derby. sorry to hear of it

Has the coolant sytem been looked at of late or messed with, an air lock perhaps? run it from cold on the drive until the car is warm and then see if there is any froth under the cap

Try the little hoses at the back of the engine, between engine+ bulkhead. I have a car shop extendable mirror + can see under turbos, around back of engine + just about anywhere.Well Worth £1.99.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I've had another poke around this afternoon, and it seems that there is a water leak from a downpipe on the drivers side of the engine. I don't know what it is and can't find a handy photo guide to use, but it's one of two pipes below the brake fluid reservoir. Could it be part of the stuff that gets removed during the plenum water bypass operation? I had a look at Jeff's piccy guide, but can't really place my pipe.

If anyone can give me a clue about what it is and where I might get a replacement (more usefully, let me know the part number) I'd appreciate it!

can you not just replace with some non precut hose? maybe even just temporarily to get you running and check wether youve done further damage? as ck300z says about air locks, they can cause all sorts of problems and without jacking the front up etc i dont think you will get most of them out.

I can barely see the pipe in question from the top, let alone get some replacement hose on it:cursing: I'm not confident about taking other bits off to get to it, particularly as one bit would appear to be the braking system!

I was rather hoping that someone would be able to tell me what it was and how you get to it :) If I have the correct part, at least I won't be buggering about trying to cut pipe to right length and then twisting it into a pretzel to make it fit.

I do have a jack and stands to lift the front, but I'll be working in the street and that's a little worrying for me, too. Drivers round my way are likely to reverse over my legs :death: Yes, I'm a coward.

had a little look at mine this morning, to try and see what you were talking about and all i could see that matched your description was a piece of maybe 3/4" hose that runs from the turbo area, up towards the plenum and i could gain access through the gap on the right hand side of the master cylnder. sound about right? maybe take a photo for us to give you a better idea.
