Not sure if this is a re-post, but many not be aware that National Tyres do an oil & filter change for only £26 (if booked online or £29 at the branch).

This is for Magnatec semi-synthetic oil + filter + labour.

On the basis that the oil is normally £20-25 + £9 for the filter, this is very cheap IMHO.

That sure is cheap....

....but I wouldn't let a National Tyres guy near my car!!

I have a fleet account with them and from my experience, tasks like wheel balancing and tracking adjustments tax a few of their operatives. And that's just on some simple vans and a few VW cars!!

Plus I took the Rav-4 to them for a front wheel allignment and they took 5 attempts but still couldn't get the steering wheel straight. ATS did it in 5 minutes!!

Richard:oops:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I agree with Rich although i'd poss let them jack the car up to change a tyre after a small Q&A quiz,

they dont even take the sump plug out. they use a tube down your dip stick and suck the oil out. so all you shit is still in your sump.

Really?

Really?

Yep its done allot now :( ideal if your sump nut is welded on like i had once but apart from that i'd want it dropped not sucked out lol

LOL - but I still would not let them jack a ZX unless I was watching. Ther're bound to do it under the sills and bugger them up......:hammer:

Flippin' 'eck - I never knew that!.....:scared:

I'd always want it drained - after the engine has been warmed up fully - to ensure all the old oil and crap is flushed out! Next time one of my cars goes in for a service I'll be asking the question (except with the Z - I can't see Jeff doing that!!).

Oh, and one more warning about using an outfit like Nationals; I doubt they'd use an OEM Nissan oil filter! That's also bad news for a ZX.......:hang:

I actually run a litre of oil through my engine after all the old stuff has drained out just to flush out any last bit of old oil out of the pan before refitting the sump plug and filling up again.

As do i :) ...and a good tip!

4 litres of Mobile 1 Super S is usually 19.99 from Halfords.

Mobil Super S is NOT a Mobil 1 product & is only a semi synthetic oil. Still a good oil but nowhere near the same standard as Mobil 1! :smartass:

How do we know this is not happening at all dealerships and garages? I don't like it at all but I'm sure National are only following practices in the wider industry, yet we are happy for our Mercs, BMWs etc. to be subject to such things.

Quite unnerving though!:scared:

No doubt very true.

A good question indeed mate - and one I will ask next time my SLK goes into MB for a service.....

......Incidentally, whilst PaulC is on here.....

......how do you do remove the old oil in your dealership mate?

Tis true! Many dealers (Mercedes included) have resorted to sucking the oil out through the dipstick tube.

I have refused to do this & our workshop still drains through the sump bung :thumbup1: In fact I have just bought 2 new oil drainers!!

On a Mercedes A Service many dealers do not even put the car on a ramp! In a bay, oil filter accessed from the top, suck the oil through the dipstick tube, kick the tyres & send it out the door  This is all as per Mercedes service schedules too!

We still do a full inspection regardless of the schedule & the fact Mercedes give us about 5 minutes of time to do it LOL!

On that basis, assuming one uses a garage for this work, it's probably fair to say that the majority of garages will use this method.

Very disheartening though I have to say!

I used to change oil myself, but since 2 retinal detachments a few years back, I'm not allowed to strain myself too much for fear of complications. Loosening/tightening sump plug nuts is therefore a no no unfortunately! :mad2:
