Been working on the LED conversion for the rear lights over the weekend and before I go any further with it I need some opinions on what would look best on the radius part of the light segments.

Unfortunately it’s down to my poor camera skills and no understandy the functions. The LED's are so bright that my camera has a problem with it. They are Red on top and Amber on the bottom. Any advise on taking better pictures would be great. Im using a SONY Cyber-shot 12.1 mp

LOL wish i was loaded ......but deffo put me down for a full kit to build my own ..give me something to do on a cold dark winters night ......might go for the ready builds yet dependant on final costs in comparrison to DIY

cracking cracking job fella

No that's great buddy just wanted to make sure that they were clear when off and the indicator was at the top :D

And to fix it you'll need to adjust the aperture setting to a smaller number to reduce the amount of light let in to the sensor and you'll find the light bloom should reduce and you'll be able to make out more detail but the background will be virtually black

do you mean front and back Steve (full kit)?

We should be able to come to a special arangement just for you mate to help with getting your Zed back on the road :wink:

Thanks for the kind comments mate

umm... indicator is on the bottom but you could change it if you wanted.

Yes the LED's used have water clear lenses so clear when off.

i'm being lazy now by not reading the manual but is it the EV setting i need to change?

May be i should just go find the manual lol

Looks very nice.

How did you 'chrome' the pcb's?

Do you have a price for these kits yet?

Sorry Graham only answered half your question.

The circuit boards are made from a copper clad Mylar material (the same stuff that’s used on the back of the speedo/rev clocks in the dash) and mounted on mirror finish Perspex cut to shape then drilled.

Martin

Im using 5mm through hole LED's but 3 different types to get into the corners. Type 1 are normal sized 5mm LED's with a height profile of 8.6mm, Type 2 are again 5mm LED's but with a height profile of 6.5mm known as flat top LED's and Type 3 which again are 5mm LED's but with a height profile of 4.7mm these are know as straw hat LED's. These had matching brightness and appearance when on.

There are issues with clearance between the lens and the LED's in the corners but the shorter profile LED's should be ok in the corners.

The indicator units contain 190 LED's per side and the side/brake units have 196 LED's. I’ve looked at the SMD LED's and they do look a bit difficult to solder but if these units don’t look right when finished then I may try these next.

Hmm, that sounds rather familiar. Wonder where I've seen that idea before!!

Well done Martin, excellent job. Can i ask why you put the resistors on the front of the board instead of the back of it? there'll be a little heat build up with those little suckers lol

Maybe you should ask the people that actually designed the lights rather than just the guy who stole somebody else's ideas! :nono:

I just hope none of you bitch about the lack of after-market parts for these great cars in the future. Why should anyone waste their time and money developing items only for others to rip them off.

You've only yourselves to blame! :headvswal

Can you enlighten us on who he's ripped off then ?

I've been watching zedwizz through his development of these

and also him taking in feedback from us so I personally can't

believe it !

I take it you are referring to the clear corner company. Do they have the patent for the design? Do they supply just the led boards and at a competetive price?

Having had a pair of clear corner 99 specs in to fix for a member, these are designed differently and with a proper printed circuit, rather than on copper backed perf board and no over the top variable resistors. It wouldnt have been cost effective, to send them back to the US and they were just out of warranty, so after trying to fix the original board, which was a lot more hassle, than it was worth, the idea to improve upon the original design was born, by a member who put a lot of time and effort into the new design.

As enthusiasts, we strive to improve upon anything on the market that might save money and enable the UK guys to have access to mods that dont involve import duty.

There are numerous people on the net making their own led lights or boards and as the clearcorner lights seemed to be marketed predominantly to the US, i dont see a problem, IMO of course.

Constructive criticism is welcome and any issues you might have can be discussed, rather than having a dig. If you trade in zed parts, you should be happy that a product is available in the UK and made in the UK, surely a benefit all round.

Unbelievable!

You always get one …

Just to put you straight on a few things Zedman or who ever you are...

1, If your talking about the clear corner LED units then you may be interested I knowing that mine are constructed in a completely different way, I have not had access to these or any similar LED units and I have only seen pictures of the clear corner units showing very little detail in the way of circuit design if you must know I used and free online LED array design program to work out the array which is freely available to anyone with access to the internet and a CAD program to design the boards In short this is all my own work

2, As far as I know I have not broken any copyright law by retro fitting a 20 year old light unit.

I know you have LED light units fitted already and that you had a go at making them yourself you said that before somewhere in a post.. oh yes here it is posted on the other forum 10/7/10

You said

I've already got full LED '99 spec rears on mine.

I know when I had mine made they were a biatch to do apparently, and expensive.

How much do you expect to be selling these for?

So its ok for you to copy them is it???

Then you said on the 10/08/10

I looked in to doing a set myself years ago so I do know exactly how hard it would be to make a design that allows the LED's in to the furthest corners of the light cluster and to design the 'switching' circuit.

I gave up and bought a set of real '99 spec, full LED light units.

Make your mind up!

TBH I can’t work out if it bothers you that someone has done something that you’re not capable of doing or if you’re pissed of about owning an inferior set of LED lights.

If Zedman took the time to read my threads about making these then maybe he would have answered his own questions.

Ha ha ha ha ha someone just got punkd ha ha

Getting back to the reason this thread here, i'd be wanting a kit too they look cool as f*** zedwizz, top marks :cool2:

Ok i'll put your name down

Thanks for the comments

hey zedwizz,

buying myself a new zed on saturday and doing the whole conversion thing again

so put me down for a full kit - reverse - fog - and the new ones just designed.

maybe you can do me a package deal !

cheers

lee

Ok Lee no problem mate. We can have a chat about it send me a PM

Thanks

It's obvious to me you are extremely erudite Zedwizz, and on many levels. Think you might just have put someone firmly in their place. Jealousy and envy are not attractive traits, the complete opposite to your research, design and manufacturing. Top work.

Zedwhizz you are a star matey ...yes it would be the full kit . minus the rear fogs and reverse which i allready have ....what is included in teh front kit by the way ??

this is very much appreciated ...by ALL on here the work you have put in to give a LOT of peoplr what they have wanted for years

many many thanks

Steve

I'm after a set of rear light LEDs too mate. Are you able to install? I really don't relish the thought of taking my 99-rears apart!

:)
