hello every1,

just a question to see what people think,

i have fitted a couple of sets of turbos to zeds with engines in,

but everywhere i read they say the drivers side is almost impossible,

but i remove the steering bar and master cylinder and i find it fiddly but not that bad,

i find the passanger side is worse i have to undo 4 bolts on turbo housing which allows half the turbo to spin round so i can get to the manifold bolts and i drop the turbo and the manifold together,

a lot of people say you shouldnt do it with the engine in the car,

but in the manual im sure it says to remove them with the engine in the car,

i may be wrong though, and may of misread it,

my trade is a mechanic and when i have done them i have had an headstart as i had access to a workshop with ramps, air tools[air ratchets] and i think the biggest help is quality tools, they just seem shapped better and dont slip,

little spanners and ratchet spanners help a lot on a z too,

as anyone else done them and found them not to be as bad as they thought,

as anyone else got any views or advice they might like to give as it may help someone else with not a lot of money but dont mind getting dirty and smashing their knuckles to bits, if i couldnt work on my car myself i doubt id have it now because its hard enough to afford to get these cars how you want them without paying labour bills, and id be gutted to get rid of my z,

it makes you happy when you do something yourself exspecially when you save the ammount of cash that some garages charge and a lot of us who dont do a lot on our own z's probally know more then them about z's

anyway goodluck to anyone who as big akward dirty knuckle cracking jobs to come,

going to be changing the turbos this week with the engine in? any hints and tips? on the best way of going about it. read the service manual, and it does indeed say about doing it with the engine in, but would rather hear from people who have done this before. also whats this mention of modified spanners? anyone got any pictures of spanners they have modified to do the job? or would these swivel head ratchet spanners i got do with out modification?

nope, my slam panel doesnt cover my headlight adjusters, only thing i could think of was him being unable to see the bonnet catch

Hi,

At my last MOT they removed the slam panel to access the VIN plate (fair enough my mistake) - but they kindly re-located it for me by Gorilla Gluing it back on to said chrome slam panel in a position of there choice - muppets!

hello mate,

and goodluck,

my mate from round the corner posted on the forum how he bent his spanners,

i looked at them the other day,

his name is [ cbr ]

i found his name and looked at all the posts he had done and they came up,

thats the only way i can find them [not to great with computers]

i didnt bend any spanners,

drivers side,i removed = master cylinder, steering link, it makes a lot more room,

i take all the pipes off including the big black ones at the front of the turbos,

get a socket on a couple of extension bars and tap it on the nuts to unfold the metal tabs bent over the nuts

[may need a long flat head screw driver use that and tap it with an hammer if the socket wont do it]

passanger side=i take it off with the manifold, theirs 1 manifold bolt that i couldnt get to so i loosen the 4 bolts on the side of the turbo housing which allows the inlet part to swivel seperate from the exhaust part of the turbo,

i then tap the inlet part down so it gives me enough room for last manifold bolt,

i also take the radiator out gives me more room,

to unbolt the big black pipes at the front of the turbos join aload of extension bars together and go right through with them from the front where the rad was,

[when it comes to putting the black pipes back on theirs a gasket and its fiddly i used a little bit of grease to hold it in place why i got the bolts back in]

also remember to order the 2 gaskets for the oil returns at the bottom of the turbos,

and i blew the oil feeds out to make sure they were not clogging up,

and goodluck again mate,

Finally the message is getting across.

Well done guys for not throwing this choice in the bin

Like it has been before when i have tried to tell everyone it can and is being done.

Great stuff

Daz.

:)

Well, got almost there, then went to remove one of the bolts holding the turbo to manifold, and it snapped the thread :( looks like its going to be a engine out job to replace the manifold now. as i really don't need manifold bolts snapping either.

hello mate,

once the turbos are out should be easy to change manifold,

what side of car did manifold bolt snap,

  • Author
drivers, thats the one with the smoking problem

id get turbo out and then change manifold and only at a last resort pull engine

ok ill try that, going to need new elbows anyway or drill and re thread the ones on it, as the bolts are that old the dirt and bolt is now part of the thread and no amount of wire brushing was shifting it. those cats had definitely been on the car for 20 years no joke lol

hello mate if you need manifolds im sure i have a pair in shed i may have elbows too,

you can have them for free the only problem is getting them to you i would post them but dont know how much it would cost,

if you need them let me know and were sort something out,

Hows the guide coming along with all the nice weather puts me in the mood to get me hands dirty

  • 7 months later...

hi all vodkashots how did it go in the end my turbo seals have gone so iv gotta replace mine now

  • 1 month later...

After 11 months with the car sorn because the driver side turbo

and after almost gave up on car I gave the last chance to the Z.

And after a few hours under the car I discovered that the fault of the car was been sorn for so long was my laziness.

I will not say it was an easy job to remove the driver side turbo with the engine in

But it was not that difficult.

If you have to do just do it:thumbup:

Sorry my english:whistling:

I am changing turbos on both sides now. Will post a how-to when I'm done :)

I still think removing the engine is far easier, plus you can do so many other things with it out, however, i do understand that if you don't have the facilities, i.e. hoist, stand, plenty of room etc. then you can do it with the engine in, I just go for anything that makes life easier!

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, I'm doing it at the moment! Drivers side turbo needs to be 'moved' just so I can fit the oil feed adapter type thingy into the block that fell off, 30 second job then I can put the turbo back, aaaarrrrgghhh.... Anyways, 3 of the 4 turbo bolts are really easy, the 4th tho, is a nightmare, i just CANNOT get to fold back the metal tab, I'm tellin ya, 2 days on it now, seems it can't be done! I really don't want to lift the engine just to do a 30 second job, as nowt else needs doing to it, how can I get to this tab, when you can't even see it?

I know exactly what your saying guys, have removed the engine 4 times already in the past, I know the crack, but all I have to do is get 10mm clearance from the turbo to block, so I can screw something in, then I'm done, also, everything, and I mean everything that needs doing to the engine has been done, the 2 days has also been prepping for under seal etc...... It's just that horrible metal tab on the turbo bolt!!!

lol I hate that metal tab. Try grabbing it from the side, not underneath. And just pull like your life is on the line :D
